Trailer Tuesday: Hairspray

I'm sure my usual blog readers won't really be drawn to this one, but I thought I had better do the loyal pfan thing and post up the trailer for the musical Hairspray, one of 3 Michelle Pfeiffer pfilms due for release in 2007. As this short little teaser reveals (and it reveals little else), Hairspray is all-star all the way: John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Queen Latifah, Amanda Bynes, James Marsden, Allison Janney etc etc etc.

If the teaser does nothing for you, check out the official Hairspray website, which has a more interesting flash intro.

For the record, Hairspray is based on the hit, award-winning Broadway musical, which is in turn based on a cult John Waters movie from the early 1980s. Here's the IMDB plot summary:

Pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad (Nicole Blonsky) and her best friend Penny Pingleton (Amanda Bynes) audition to be on The Corny Collins Show and Tracy wins. But when scheming Amber Von Tussle (Brittany Snow) and her mother (Michelle Pfeiffer) plot to destroy Tracy, it turns to chaos. With Queen Latifah as hip DJ Motormouth Maybelle, John Travolta as Edna Turnblad, Jim Broadbent as Wilbur Turnblad, James Marsden as show host Corny Collins, and Zac Efron as Amber/Tracy's boyfriend, the popular and cute Link Larkin.

Hairspray is due for release this July. Internet buzz about the film has been pretty mixed so far, mostly because people are cynical about the gimicky all-star casting and the featherlight filmmakers (think Cheaper By the Dozen) behind it. I'm prepared to give the movie a chance because A) it looks like upbeat musical that's a lot of fun, and B) Michelle not only gets to sing, but Nip/Tuck's nazi Brittany Snow is playing her daughter.

BTW, if you have any Trailer Tuesday requests, please let me know. There seems to be a bit of a shortage of really interesting trailers at the moment.
