New Spidey 3 poster

Say what you want about Spider-man being the whiniest superhero about, but at least the film-makers, as well the poster designers, are really committed to exploring the complexities of having a secret identity, and how it messes with perceptions of self. Not since Batman Returns have film-makers explored how such duality puts psychological stresses on superheroes... and villains.

It's definitely a step in the right direction. I mean think about a superhero like Superman, practically a god, but once you add the insecurities of daily life, the problems of parenthood, questions on the efficacy of their chosen lifestyle... you create a much more interesting and believable character.

It's great to see superheroes being taken seriously over the past few years - much truer to their comic book origins than thier Saturday morning cartoon versions.

Well, it's taken superheroes something like 60 years to be treated seriously onscreen.

Superman was a blockbuster flash in the pan in the 1970s (but then followed by rubbish sequels and overblown imitators like Flash Gordon), Batman was another solo success story in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Now, with Marvel finally getting their creations faithfully depicted on the big screen, we're in a superhero movie golden age.
