Trailer Tuesday: Monsters Vs. Aliens

I don’t know why it is, but typically the trailers for CGI-animated movies leave me disinterested – even if the full, finished products are outstanding. Monsters Vs. Aliens, the new family film from Dreamworks, is an exception to the rule. The teaser trailer above had me chuckling along quite happily from the outset, thanks to some very witty exchanges (although to be fair I did find this follow-up trailer to be a tad on the juvenile side).

Anyway, the basic plot for Monsters Vs. Aliens sees Susan, a very ordinary young woman, transformed into a giant after a meteor strike. Labelled a monster, she's captured by the military and quarantined in an isolated research facility. There she meets other monsters Dr. Cockroach, the Missing Link, B.O.B and Insectosaurus. Despised and feared as these creatures are, they emerge as Earth's only hope when an evil alien overlord targets earth for domination.


As is typical with Dreamworks animated films, Monsters Vs. Aliens features an all-star voice cast that includes Reese Witherspoon, Hugh Laurie, Seth Rogen, Will Arnett, Stephen Colbert, Rainn Wilson and Kiefer Sutherland.

Although I haven't stumbled across a great deal of it, buzz for Monsters Vs. Aliens has been exceptionally positive. Like Kung Fu Panda the film is apparently a helluva lot of fun without skimping on story or emotional content. And like Kung Fu Panda, the film apparently takes great delight in playing with movie genre conventions - here 1950s B-grade Sci-fi as opposed to Eastern martial arts films.

Released in 3-D (and presumably a normal format as well), Monsters Vs. Aliens is out in North America on 27 March and on 3 April in South Africa - just in time for the school holidays!

My daughter has been flipping out wanting to see this movie since January when she saw the first trailer. I'll let you know if it's any good.

As some of you know, I’ve been fangirling hard over the new Tomb Raider , the first entry in the video game series since 2008, and ostensibly a reboot for the entire franchise . Taking the form of an origin story, Tomb Raider 2013 depicts the events that transformed a beautiful, if bookish, archaeology graduate into a pistol-packing adventurer with a devil-may-care attitude. Weekend report-back: beach, board games and books

So I'm back in the office after a 4 day weekend. And I'm trying not to remind myself that it's almost 3 months until the next public holiday. Bah! Anyway, pop culture didn't play too massive a part in my mini-break. There was braai -ing (expected on National Braai Day), the baking of pretzels in celebration of Oktoberfest ( even if we weren't in Munich this year ), working on the next Girlz 'N' Games comic , and a family lunch to celebrate my mother and cousin's birthdays. A hefty chunk of the weekend however was spent at one of my favourite holiday destinations: the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. We were celebrating a friend's birthday at his family's holiday flat in Southbroom. Movies today, SA!

Despite the fact that 5 new films open in South Africa today, not a single one is worthy of an extended Pick of the Week description. If you haven't seen it yet (like me), go and watch Disney-Pixar's Up instead. If you can't get past a deeply ingrained "grown-up" prejudice against animated films, what about seeking out the Johnny Depp-Christian Bale gangster movie Public Enemies ?
