Movies released today
It's another big week for movies with 5 new films making their debut in South African cinemas.
If you're an Anne Hathaway fan, you can choose from 2 new films starring your favourite leading lady. First up is thriller-drama Passengers, co-starring Watchmen and Hard Candy's Patrick (Nite Owl) Wilson, about a grief councillor called in to help the survivors of a plane crash. Only thing is, the survivors' stories aren't quite matching up with the official airline account of events.
I'd never even heard of this film until I saw the posters, and checking it out on Rotten Tomatoes it scored a dire 22% Fresh.
Hathaway fans may have more luck with Rachel Getting Married, which scored the actress her first ever Academy Award nomination. In this indie-flavoured drama, Hathaway plays a troubled young woman who comes out of rehab to attend her sister's wedding. Her return though triggers all kinds of family tensions.
87% Fresh at Rotten Tomatoes.
It debuted last month in the States on Friday the 13th, and it debuts locally today on another "unlucky" Friday. Friday the 13th is a semi-reboot of the classic slasher series, sampling elements from the first 3-4 movies to offer a retooled take on machete-wielding Jason Voorhees and his exploits at Camp Crystal Lake. Don't expect the franchise formula to change much though - I'm sure Jason hacks up just as many screaming, sexed-up teens as usual.
The film scored a rubbish 26% Fresh at Rotten Tomatoes, but as a big fan of the original I'm actually curious to see it.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop looks to be a lot of lighthearted silliness, as an overweight, hopelessly incompetent security guard has to suddenly get all "Die Hard" when a group of thugs invade the mall, seal it off from the outside mall and take a number of people hostage. The King of Queens' Kevin James stars.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop scored a rating of 29% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, although it's probably worth mentioning that the film sat at No. 1 at the American box office for 2 weeks.
Finally this week we have Confessions of a Shopaholic, a Bridget Jones-esque tale based on another chick-lit bestseller. So guys, you have been warned that this may not be for you!
Borat's real-life missus, Isla Fisher plays a debt-riddled spendthrift who accidentally ends up working at a financial magazine as a savings adviser. Hopelessly out of her depth, she tries to do everything to impress her hottie boss (Hugh Dancy). The film scored a 22% Fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes.
It's an interesting mix of guy and girl flicks this weekend. It'll be very interesting to see when it comes to movie-going couples just who gets their way.
Myself, I'm off to watch Watchmen again. Cheers!
