The Weekend
Well, apart from slicing my finger open with a freshly-sharpened paring knife on Friday, the weekend was a good one.
Paul and I spent a good portion of every evening playing the Family Guy video game. We’re right near the end now but completely stuck when it comes to battling Peter’s old nemesis, the Black Knight. Once the knight’s health is low enough, the battle slips into ‘key combo’ mode where you have to tap buttons in a certain order to defeat the knight. We can’t string a single combo together – the knight just pushes Peter away.
And we can’t figure out what we’re doing wrong. Are we just too slow? Are we supposed to hold the button down until the next button is show, or just tap it once? I know it’s an off-chance that anyone here has played the game and will be able to comment, but if anyone has any ideas how to defeat the Black Knight, please comment. Online FAQs and message boards have proved useless so far, although apparently the Black Knight battle is a common frustration.
Anyway, on Saturday we hired a Gemini double-seater kayak down by uShaka and spent an hour paddling around. Once you got past the disconcerting thought that you’re out far in deep water, and way past the shark nets, it’s a lot of fun – particularly once the swell picks up a bit and you’re splashed as you bounce across the surface of the waves . It’s certainly good exercise. Apparently there was a whale shark feeding off the Durban beachfront, but we just weren’t able to spot it. We did enjoy some lovely views of the Durban beachfront though, being out much further than you would if you were surfing or bodyboarding. And hiring a canoe for R50 on occasion is a much more appealing option at the moment than splashing out R3000-R5000 for a canoe.
On Sunday we had a family braai at Paul’s house. And that was about it, really, for the weekend. We played some more Titan Quest as well, and with a helmet that gives me +10% to experience, I jumped 2 levels to 45 pretty quickly. I also found my first ever piece of purple, uber-rare Legendary equipment, the Bone Breastplate. Although it would hurt my resistances, I've also been flirting with dropping my Ramses set for some heavy-duty Earth Elemental armour I found. Man, I really need the caravans promised in the expansion so I can stockpile all my goodies instead of offloading them on assorted Level 1 mules.
Oh, and I'm thoroughly enjoying Volume 3 of the Sandman collection, which relegates the Dream King to more of a supporting role. There's are 2 fantastic tales, illustrated by Kelley Jones - Calliope (which deals with how a once-wooed muse is raped by writers in the 20th Century), and the stunning A Dream of a Thousand Cats (which reveals exactly what cats dream about). And I'm currently in the middle of A Midsummer Night's Dream (drawn by Charles Vess), the only comic to ever win the World Fantasy Award.
