Entertainment updates for Wednesday

Some bits and pieces of entertainment news for this Ash Wednesday (last night I made way too many pancakes and consumed way too much vetkoek at a church function):

300 received a spontaneous standing ovation at its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival. Who would have ever though that would happen (in Europe especially) for a film based on a graphic novel? The film opens in North America on 9 March, and in South Africa on 30 March.

Speaking of 300, the site for the film's soundtrack by Tyler Bates is now online. It mixes classical orchestral with heavy contemporary rock. I'm definitely getting hold of this one!

Aaron "Thank you for Smoking; The Core" Eckhart is playing Harvey Dent/Two-Face in Batman Begins sequel, The Dark Knight. He joins Heath Ledger, who is playing the Joker as the 2nd of the film's villains. This said, it's unclear whether Dent will give into his suppressed rage and actually become the coin-flipping, duality-obsessed Two-Face, or whether he'll just be filling the deceased district attorney's shoes, fighting back against organised crime and making friends with Bruce Wayne.

Despite being labelled cheesy, unintentionally funny and only scoring 27% at Rotten Tomatoes, the Marvel comic adaptation, Ghost Rider broke box office records in the US this last weekend, achieving over $50 million on the 4-day President's Day weekend. Perhaps Hollywood will finally realise that they can actually release crowd-pleasing blockbusters all year round instead of trying to cram them all into the short Summer movie season.

For the record, other comic flicks based on less popular Marvel characters, The Punisher and Elektra, scored 28% and 7% respectively.

In other news, rockers 3 Doors Down have been announced as the 4th international act joining My Coke Fest 2007, the multi-artist concert festival to be held in Johannesburg on 27 April and Cape Town on 1 May. So it's now 3 Doors Down, Hoobastank, Evanescence and Guns 'N' Roses. SA groups performing have yet to be announced.

Anyway, I've also been glutting myself on new music lately, but more about those artists in another post coming soon.
