Plans for the weekend

Well, technically my weekend starts at around 1pm today, with the whole company heading down to watch test runs at the A1 Grand Prix - the main race happens on Sunday. Now I’m not a motor racing fan at all. I just can’t see the excitement about speeding around on the same 2km piece of track for several hours. The only thing that piques my interest is accidents, and frankly, that’s sick. However, it will be an interesting first-time experience, seeing, hearing (I’ve got earplugs) and smelling the vehicles in action, up close. Maybe, just maybe, I’ll find a reason that excuses all the traffic chaos that A1 preparations have caused in Durban this last month.

Otherwise, Paul and I are going to give the big Black Knight boss battle in the Family Guy video game another bash. My fingers have been itching lately as well to replay God Of War, considering the jaw droppingly positive reviews the sequel has been receiving. I need to be back ‘in the zone’ for a game that has been receiving universal acclaim!

I’m also going to be watching the 194 minute Director’s Cut of Kingdom of Heaven, kindly loaned to me by G. After Gladiator, Blackhawk Down, GI Jane and Thelma and Louise, I will always have time for Ridley Scott’s movies. I saw the original Crusades-set film which was something of a disappointment – characters inexplicably appear and disappear, there is very little explanation of events and emotional resonance is largely absent. Turns out this was because Scott was forced to hack his dream project down to 2 hours at studio insistence – the film was released after Oliver Stone’s bloated Alexander disaster. Now Scott’s Director’s Cut has been released, with an additional 45 minutes included, as Scott originally intended. Reviews for the Director’s Cut have been much more positive, and I’m very interested to see the difference. As well as more of Casino Royale’s Eva Green, who first caught my attention here.

Otherwise, I think a braai is in order sometime this weekend. And if everything goes according to plan, a group of us will be going to uShaka’s Wet ‘n Wild water park on Sunday when the rest of Durban will either be at the A1, or sitting at home because of A1 related road closures.

In other news, Staind has been added to the My Coke Fest line up. When I heard the news I admit there was a moment where I paused (as I did with 3 Doors Down). Staind… why do I know that name? I’m sure there’s a reason I should be excited… Scrounging around in my mp3 folder at home, I discovered a few excellent reasons to get excited about Staind coming to SA. Here are the top 2:

1) Staind’s music is fantastically ‘heavy’.
2) They sing one of my all-time favourite songs, ‘It’s Been Awhile’. Jeremy of Popped Culture ran a recent article on his blog about songs you will always associate with movies. It’s Been Awhile will always remain linked in my subconscious to The Butterfly Effect (the song was used in the trailer), which, despite its plotholes, I thoroughly enjoyed for all its mind tripping.
