A relaxing weekend
This last weekend was a pleasant, relaxing one. In a way it started on Thursday afternoon with the entire agency heading down to the Advertisers’ Benevolent Fund Golf Day at Windsor Golf Course. Our agency’s teams had been playing (and drinking) since early that morning. We, as spectators, just plonked ourselves down on a picnic blanket to sit eating and drinking, and waiting for the teams to come back in off the course.
A particular highlight, apart from the lamb on a spit buffet later on in the evening, was cruising around the golf course on a golf cart. G, who’s now working at the company, and I leapt on the back of the cart Battlefield (or is it Joint Operations?) style, while a Multimedia guy and Account Executive sped around the course, avoiding ditches and chasing Egyptian geese.
And yes, we also discovered there is still money in advertising. An admittedly giant bottle of wine was auctioned off for R6000 at the fundraising event.
Anyway, back to the real weekend…
I did the sweet, thoughtful girlfriend thing twice this weekend by… baking. On Friday evening, before watching Paris Hilton get staked through the head in House of Wax, I made cupcakes (a marble combo of vanilla and chocolate, topped with butter icing and Smarties – M&M like, chocolate centred candy).
And on Sunday evening I baked banana bread.
On Saturday, after a morning cycle, Paul and I compensated for this spurt of healthy exercise by eating… all day.
It was my uncle’s birthday so we had a big family lunch – at 3 weeks, my little cousin Trent is absolutely adorable. Then in the late afternoon we headed to a braai at the designer creative director’s house. It really was a pleasant afternoon of socialising away from the office, although the ultimate purpose of the evening was to sit and watch Season 3 of Little Britain on DVD.
Little Britain, an award winning British skit series has become something of a cult thing on the Creatives side of the studio. All day long you’ll hear series catch phrases like ‘I sooo can’t believe you just said that,’ ‘Computer says no’ and ‘That’s a right kafuffle’.
On Sunday, Durban was sunny, hot and breezeless – perfect beach weather. Despite a late start, Paul and I headed down to Brighton Beach on the Bluff and found it largely deserted. Flying our kite was a bit difficult as it hung slack in the windless air, but we lolled around in the sun and splashed in the waves for a few hours.
We then spent most of the day lazing around at Paul’s (the sun always makes me so sleepy) before heading to his grandmother’s place to tune her TV, and then back to my house to eat Pizza Hut and watch the fantastic ‘Egyptian’ episode of Rome in which Caesar meets decadent princess / cunning sexual predator Cleopatra. It’s my favourite episode of the series so far.
Anyway, this week is going to be very busy. I have something on every evening, and I had better start work on my GEAR column. I have a feeling a deadline is looming, not that I’ve been told anything… At least I know what I'm going to be writing for my 1 year anniversary column.
