It's "Screw The Playlist" Day

It may be Friday the 13th, but it's also "Screw the Playlist" day on 5FM in celebration of the radio station's birthday.

And it is absolutely fantastic! Instead of the same Justin Timberlake, Fergie, Beyonce and Rhianna shit they repeat every 3 hours, we're getting quality listening today with playlist submissions from station listeners.

Already, before 7:30 we've had Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, Pixies' Where Is My Mind, Metallica's Enter Sandman, Skunk Anansi, AC/DC and Deep Purple.

You'd think that the overwhelmingly positive reaction to Screw The Playlist would make the station and programme managers think twice about what they play on the remaining 364 days of the year. If they gave listeners what they wanted, and accommodated more rock, listeners would be a lot happier... and less likely to switch on the CD player.

Yes it was nice for a change, especially for 5fm. I woke up to "Beds are burning!" and went to work listening to Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.

When 5fm play an oldie it's great! This is mainly because they play (and I quote) "same Justin Timberlake, Fergie, Beyonce and Rhianna shit they repeat every 3 hours".

But when East Coast Radio play a new song it's great too because all they seem to play is old music!

The way I see it:
5FM = new music
ECR = old music

I don't know which is worse (although I do love 5FM more than ECR)...

PS: Noelle, when are you switching over to the new Blogger ?

Ja, CD's FTW at the moment because 5fm play the same crap over and over. I think some one needs to start a new rock/alternative radio station with some "night zoo heavy metal" throw in there. There are still goths/metal heads out ther that would like to listen to the radio and enjoy what they hear!

Argh! "FTW"! What is this geek speak doing on my blog?! Blergh...

And, Lord Spaceman, I'm not sure. I've heard a few people have had problems with the Beta, and I'm not keen to spend a lot of time fiddling if something goes wrong.

What have your experiences been like with it?

It went smoothly! No problems at all. I only lost my links (and slightly customized template), but the way it allows you to build them back up again is cool (very dynamic) and a LOT more options are available to you. Well worth a look, no problems from my side.

Anyone know what the current legislation is on running your own (legal :P)radio station, because quite frankly the only way we're going to get a dedicated rock station is if someone steps forward and creates one.

Actually, Paul looked into it... There are a helluva lot of ICASA requirements to meet - you have to have a business plan laid out for several years, as well as investors. I wish someone could pull it off... it would be absolutely awesome.

Anyway, I was actually a bit let down by Screw the Playlist Friday. It started off so well, but they still managed to repeat a lot of stuff - Enter Sandman, Hotel California and Stairway to Heaven were played multiple times. What a waste of good radio time.
