Trailer Tuesday: Trick 'r Treat

There's been a lot of positive buzz swirling around the Internet about Trick 'r Treat, a horror film from writer-director, Michael Dougherty, the screenwriter behind X-Men 2 and Superman Returns. Good friend and frequent collaborator Bryan (Usual Suspects, X-Men 2) Singer is producing. Plus it's from Legendary Pictures in collaboration with Warner Bros, so you know it has a solid pedigree.

And honestly, watching this trailer, the movie looks great - far more creative, polished and retro-feeling than most horror flicks these days, which just seem to resort to degrading torture-porn to shock audiences. And, apparently, as an added bonus, Trick 'r Treat also includes that element that is even rarer in horror today - a healthy sense of offbeat humour.


Here's the Trick 'r Treat plot synopsis, with involves four interwoven stories that occur in one small town on Halloween:

It is said that Halloween is the night when the dead rise to walk among us and other unspeakable things roam free. The rituals of All Hallows Eve were devised to protect us from their evil mischief, and one small town is about to be taught a terrifying lesson that some traditions are best not forgotten.

Nothing is what it seems when a suburban couple learns the dangers of blowing out a Jack-o-Lantern before midnight; four women cross paths with a costumed stalker at a local festival; a group of pranksters goes too far and discovers the horrifying truth buried in a local legend; and a cantankerous old hermit is visited by a strange trick-or-treater with a few bones to pick.

Costumes and candy, ghouls and goblins, monsters and mayhem - the tricks and treats of Halloween turn deadly as strange creatures of every variety (human and otherwise)try to survive the scariest night of the year.

Trick 'r Treat is set for a (surprise, surprise!) October release in the US.

I saw a preview for this when I watched 300. It looked creepy. If anyone has seen it yet, (That is if it is out yet,) let me know if it is worthit!

Taking the form of an origin story, Tomb Raider 2013 depicts the events that transformed a beautiful, if bookish, archaeology graduate into a pistol-packing adventurer with a devil-may-care attitude. Weekend report-back: beach, board games and books

So I'm back in the office after a 4 day weekend. And I'm trying not to remind myself that it's almost 3 months until the next public holiday. Bah! Anyway, pop culture didn't play too massive a part in my mini-break. There was braai -ing (expected on National Braai Day), the baking of pretzels in celebration of Oktoberfest ( even if we weren't in Munich this year ), working on the next Girlz 'N' Games comic , and a family lunch to celebrate my mother and cousin's birthdays. A hefty chunk of the weekend however was spent at one of my favourite holiday destinations: the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. We were celebrating a friend's birthday at his family's holiday flat in Southbroom. Movies today, SA!

Despite the fact that 5 new films open in South Africa today, not a single one is worthy of an extended Pick of the Week description. If you haven't seen it yet (like me), go and watch Disney-Pixar's Up instead. If you can't get past a deeply ingrained "grown-up" prejudice against animated films, what about seeking out the Johnny Depp-Christian Bale gangster movie Public Enemies ?
