Alvin and the chipmunks

The downside to the surge in CGI advancement is that it seems to have given film makers complete carte blanche to make CGI-creature/live action combos by cashing in on some very dated cartoon properties. Sure there is some nostalgia value in seeing Scooby-Doo, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Garfield and others back up on the big screen, but mostly these adaptations are horribly lame - intent simply on pleasing todays 6-8 year olds. Although, to be fair, so too are the fully live action remakes, like Inspector Gadget, George of the Jungle etc.

Now there's another one of these flicks coming out just in time for Christmas worldwide - 20th Century Fox's Alvin and the Chipmunks. Those singing rodent things, cocky Alvin, intellectual Simon, and overeating Theodore (all computer generated) will be joined my My Name Is Earl's Jason Lee as the Chipmunks' foster father Dave Seville. Brace yourself for heavy-handed messages about family and fatherhood responsibilities.

Unfortunately no... I'm bracing myself now for the vile squealing and slapstick combo.
