Entertainment updates
Hmmm, nothing much happening at all in Entertainment Land at the moment...
SuperheroHype posted up a new fuller synopsis for Watchmen - for those of you chumps who have been too lazy to read the greatest graphic novel of all time. A reminder is that the film adaptation, directed by 300's Zack Snyder, should be coming out in US Summer next year.
"Watchmen" is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" – which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union – is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion – a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers – Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity... but who is watching the Watchmen?"
Meanwhile, making a bizarre leap from brooding vigilantes to feel-good musicals, Hairspray is currently sitting at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. This could be THEE audience-pleasing movie of the US Summer. More importantly it's the first of Michelle Pfeiffer's movie projects after a 5 year absence to the big screen.
Michelle follows up this movie punch almost immediately with the cinematic upper cut that is offbeat fairy tale Stardust. Currently the Stardust and Hairspray posters are sitting side by side at the Musgrave cinemas, which makes me very happy. Especially since Michelle is in full-on villain mode in both films.
Paul is already moaning about being forced to watch a musical with "a fat chick and John Travolta in drag", but I'm likely going to be tortured with Rush Hour 3, so all's fair in love and war...
Anyway, having spoken quite a bit about 80's movie heroes rushing back to the big screen, here's a new pic of Stallone back as Rambo in John Rambo. And he looks really fat and droopy. I bought Stallone as human punching bag Rocky Balboa, but this is stretching credibility a bit too much...
ComingSoon.net has the film's synopsis listed as follows:
The film centers on a group of Christian aid workers in Thailand who recruit Rambo to guide them up the Salween River to deliver medical supplies to the Karen tribe of neighboring Burma (aka Myanmar). When the missionaries fail to return, Rambo is persuaded to take a group of mercenaries back into the war-torn border region to find them. What follows is a descent into hell on earth.
Otherwise, it's going to a helluva Harry Potter weekend!
I don't think I have the stamina to stay up for Deathly Hallows launch, but I'll be picking up my reserved copy on Saturday morning. I'm really looking forward to seeing everything resolved once and for all. Most of all I want to know who's head is on the chopping block. It's the most excited I've ever been about a Harry Potter book.
Plus, we're going to IMAX on Saturday (we've booked already) to watch Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which is based on probably my favourite of the Harry Potter books - it's certainly the darkest and angriest.
