The weekend

Well, I went into the weekend with a head cold that was full blown by Sunday, so I generally tried to take it easy – and as a result missed Burn on Saturday night and a No Rules Fight (featuring some of our Novagen club members) on Sunday evening.

Anyway, on Friday night we attended a massive birthday dinner (probably 30 people) for a friend, Kirsten, at the Musgrave Mimmos. It was very enjoyable evening, and we got to chat to some friends from long-lost university days, who we hadn’t seen in ages.

Saturday was pretty much consumed entirely by rugby. We were in the car at 12, arrived in the stadium at 1pm and then had to wait 2 hours for the match to begin.

We were shocked and annoyed by the number of Blue Bulls supporters present – it was like we were in Loftus. Plenty of our friends had struggled and failed to get tickets for the match, while 3 of the 4 stadium sides were bright blue with the Pretoria team’s supporters. What’s the advantage of a home final when all the tickets are snatched up by the visiting team’s supporters?

Anyway, as I’m sure most of you know by now, the Sharks lost 20-19, despite dominating the entire game as the superior, attacking team. However, after our second try, in the last 2 minutes of the game, the Sharks began celebrating their victory a little too soon. They botched a conversion and for some silly reason didn’t kick the ball out… which allowed the Bulls to score a try and a very easy conversion, all after the game clock had reached 00:00.

Frankly, I was more shocked than depressed. Then I got angry – the Blue Bulls did not “win” the game; the Sharks lost it… And now we Natalians have to live with the shame of defeat to our greatest rivals, arrogant assholes from behind the boerewors curtain. I walked out of the stadium muttering “One bullet, one Blue Bull”, and assorted other provincial/ethnic slurs.

So we went home after the match, drank wine and watched ultra-violent Arnold Schwarzenegger movies from the 1980s.

On Sunday I sat quietly and painted 3 more Runebound figurines while Paul worked on his Woodland Scenics model railway. We rounded off the weekend with a small braai and rewatching the first disc of Family Guy Season 5.
