New Watchmen casting rumours

Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy… There are new casting rumours circulating about Watchmen, Zack Synder’s ambitious attempt to adapt the greatest graphic novel of all time for the big screen.

Aint It Cool News reports that Patrick Wilson is being approached to play the mild-mannered Night Owl, a Batman-esque vigilante who has felt impotent since hanging up his cowl and tights. (Night Owl is in brown in the bottom right of the pic).

Jude Law has replaced Tom Cruise as the number one choice to play Ozymandias, the golden boy of masked crime fighters, who has shrewdly made a fortune by going public with his alter ego. (He’s the scowling blonde guy with the headband).

And ‘The One’ himself, Keanu Reeves could be playing another “The One”, Dr Manhattan, the only genuine superhero on the planet, whose powers over space, time and reality have guaranteed American superiority during the Cold War, but at the same time distanced him from humanity. (He’s the big naked blue dude).

The only casting rumour I’m a little uncertain about is Keanu. Dr Manhattan is a bit spaced out, but hardly “Bill and Ted surfer dude” spaced out. Otherwise, the casting sounds spot on. Wilson as Night Owl is especially brilliant.

Ron Perlman, AKA Hellboy, is apparently a possibility for bad boy Comedian, although Gerard Butler, the imposing Leonidas in Snyder’s last film, 300, will also apparently appear in the film. I think he would make a fantastic Comedian, although he is rumoured to only have a small part in Watchmen. Perhaps Butler could play the increasingly paranoid hero in the Black Freighter story within a story?

Casting announcements should be made pretty soon considering Watchmen is set to start shooting in Vancouver in August.
