The Weekend
Friday evening was the most chilled of the weekend. Paul and I just vegged on the couch, eating pizza and catching up on the first 2 episodes of Rome: Season 2. Events follow on directly from the end of Season 1, with the characters reeling from Julius Caesar’s assassination. Rome’s political life has been plunged into chaos, with bullying soldier Mark Antony stepping in to act as all-powerful Consol despite Caesar naming adolescent Octavian as his heir.
Rome is a fantastic series, but like Lost, it’s impossible to suddenly sit down and start watching it – you actually have to begin with Season 1 Episode 1 to really come to terms with the incredibly large cast, their complicated relationships with one another, and the general political intrigue.
On Saturday we did some Mother’s Day shopping and browsing at the Pavillion and then headed very early to Absa Stadium for the Super 14 Rugby Semi-final between the Sharks and the Blues.
Apart from a sluggish start to the second half (actually common in terms of Sharks performance), which allowed the Blues to overtake them for the first time, the home side were highly energised for the whole game. Once they got some more points on the scoreboard, they came right again and won the game 34-18.
So we’re going back next Saturday for the first-ever all South African Super Final, between the Sharks and the Bulls, from up behind the Boerewors curtain. This time we’re going to be using Paul’s parents’ season tickets, so we’ll be sitting far away from the drunken brawlers we had to deal with on Saturday. Way too much beer is consumed at these sporting events, with some very unfortunate results!
Anyway, we rounded off Saturday evening playing Settlers of Cataan (a very slow game given a dice-rolling shortage of brick and iron) and talking absolute rubbish till late with our usual boardgaming partners, Warrren and Robin.
Sunday was Mother’s Day and this year it was spent with Paul’s family, first having breakfast with his grandmother at the uShaka Wimpy, and then going with Paul’s parents and other grandparents for lunch at Dirk’s on Southway. What a disaster! Despite a set menu of just 5 choices, there were ‘hassles in the kitchen’ and we sat there for easily 2 hours without receiving our food. We weren’t alone. Other people were walking out, waitresses were in tears… and there was no management in sight. So beware! Butcher Block is a million times better!
We went and bought KFC instead. Afterwards, full on greasy chicken I passed out on Paul’s bed, in the late afternoon. My nap revived me enough for some Sunday night TV watching, as well as finishing off my latest Girlz ‘N’ Games.
