Weekend in a nutshell
Ow, I’m stiff this morning. The warm ups for Jiu-Jitsu were particularly strenuous last night – 100 star-jumps, followed by Indian push-ups, squats, assorted back and leg stretches and a few exercises that has us lifting our own body weight.
Anyway, apart from squeezing in a few bites of pop culture on my blog, I was super busy at work yesterday, with the one copywriter having left. I’ve pretty much picked up 2 workloads. Anyway, here’s my weekend in a nutshell…
Friday
One of the guys at work has developed a Little Britain fixation, and he’s been circulating his DVDs of the BAFTA winning BBC comedy series among the creative team. Catch phrases like ‘I’m the only gay in the village’, ‘Computer says No’, ‘Bittea’ and ‘It’s a ladies’ drink’ are now regularly yelled out.
This weekend, on Friday and Sunday evening, Paul and I watched all 6 episodes of Season 2. The show - a series of skits starring Matt Lucas and David Walliams - is hilarious. Basically it pokes fun at English culture and a daily life.
You have reoccurring characters like a nasty bored bank employee, the Prime Minister and his gay aide, a sleazy hypnotist who uses his powers to get his own way, a Fat Fighters / Weight watchers team, a hideous chav in her ponytail and ADIDAS tracksuit, two middle-aged spinsters who seem to live at fetes and church teas, a middleclass man still breast fed by his mother, and two transvestites obsessed with being seen as ladies.
A familiarity with English life and English humour will probably help you appreciate the show more, but it’s great. Well worth catching.
Saturday
We headed to the Pavilion to run some errands, and enjoy the flapjack breakfast special that Wimpy is currently running. We couldn’t resist going into Toys R Us to see what the latest fads are – we hadn’t been in the store since the King Kong craze around Christmas. At the moment, the place is dominated by army and, of course, pirate-themed toys, obviously as a result of Pirates of the Caribbean. Other than that we were particularly captivated by a fluffy toy called Choke the Chicken, and Frisbees that look, and feel, like flattened rats, chicken and frogs.
Oh, and we found WarCraft figurines (an orc, a dwarven rifleman and that mage who turns into a raven) for just R30.
Paul’s parents were away on Saturday evening so we threw a braai and invited people over. It was a very pleasant, relaxed evening, with a good number of the usual Durbs crowd there. On top of all the braai meat, large quantities of toasted marshmallows, Niknaks and chewy mints were consumed.
Sunday
Paul and I started the day baking, believe it or not. While I made banana bread, Paul made two batches of mielie meal bread. Other than that we pretty much played Titan Quest all day, finishing the game’s first act, set in Greece. We’re now running up and down the banks of the Nile in Ancient Egypt. My battle mage, Gothicus, now Level 21, is looking very spiffy in his brand new Rameses headdress.
