Girlz 'N' Games webcomic #73: Wonder Woman's wonderful lack of fashion sense

Right, so it's not exactly the latest news, but in late June the Internet - well, the geeky sectors anyway - was abuzz with the news that comic book character Wonder Woman, the first and most powerful of female superheroes, was receiving an overhaul.

The greatest outrage was directed at Wonder Woman's costume change, and at the time I blogged in detail about the matter. Anyway, gone are the star-spangled "broekies" and bright red go-go boots. Diana's new duds are intended to make the Amazonian princess appear more credible, contemporary and streetwise. It's interesting to note however that although Wonder Woman's new look has many haters, there are just as many vocal commentators insisting that it's about time Diana received a more realistic costume. Many claim that Wonder Woman has never been taken seriously and developed a wide following because of her ridiculously cheesy, sexist and exploitative outfit (modelled on the American flag, because the US was the first country Diana visited as an ambassador upon leaving the women-only island of Themyscira).

Anyway, the decision makers at DC Comics are generally blamed for Wonder Woman's outfit remaining unchanged for decades. But then I got to thinking, perhaps there is another less sinister, less sexist reason for Wonder Woman being denied a costume update for all these years?

Perhaps the lady herself just has no fashion sense? And if that's the case, would you have the guts to offer some constructive criticism to the most powerful woman on earth - a superhero and highly trained warrior who can easily suppress Supergirl and hold her own in a fist fight with Superman? For the record, Wonder Woman is the second mightiest character in the DC Universe, behind only Supes. Anyway, in my new Girlz 'N' Games comic it's poor Aquaman - already the laughing stock of the Justice League - who is unluckily selected to tell Wonder Woman the truth.

Of course, in creating this comic I had a marvelous time sketching all the great DC characters. For the record, original Justice League member Green Lantern would have shared panels 2 and 4 with teammates Superman, Aquaman, Batman, Martian Manhunter and Flash, but I ran out of space... so for all intents and purposes Hal Jordan is off performing his Green Lantern duties, policing Sector 2814 of the galaxy. I would also have liked to include Zatanna to counter the sausage fest effect but couldn't for the same panel-packed reasons. Oh well...
