A little bit of Harry, a tiny bit of Sherlock for Thursday...

*Sigh* I've decided. Screw any gaming convention or film festival. If I could only go to one geek fest it would have to be the San Diego Comic Con, which kicks off next Thursday. It blows that we don't have anything even close to that in South Africa. Ho hum.

Anyway, the 6th Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince arrives in South Africa on Friday, 5 December. And last week a fat collective of new pics from the film debuted online. You can view the full set at Movieweb as well as a couple more over at Just Jared.

It all looks great, as expected... apart from the fact that Jim Broadbent appears so damn conventional as new Potions professor Horace Slughorn. Where is the huge gut? Where is the walrus moustache? Where are the over-the-top creature comforts the character loved to wallow in in the book? The film makers have never veered so far from the source material before in terms of bringing a beloved character to life.

Oh, well, at least there will be lots of quidditch this time around.

In othew news relating to iconic English fictional creations, last week I blogged about the 2 Sherlock Holmes movies we have to look forward to in the next few years.

Well, now it turns out that Guy Richie's action-hero Holmes has been cast... and it's none other than Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr.

"Elementary, my dear Watson."

Downey Jr. is a great actor - check out Chaplin if you've never seen it - and as long as he doesn't veer Holmes too close to Tony Stark in terms of playing an arrogant, smug smart-mouth (with an English accent), I'm sure he'll do well in the role.

To round off this post, some of you may be pleased to know that the latest Girlz 'N' Games comic strip is currently in the colouring and shading stage. So you can expect it online soon.

I didn't realize Half Blood Prince was coming out this year.

And now I'm all excited about something not-Batman-related once again.

Should be great, MJenks. I'm very keen to see it.

I'll admit that after first reading the novel I was a bit dubious about a film adaptation - it felt to me like Half-Blood was mostly JK Rowling stalling / filling in details before the big conclusion. Little happens in Half-Blood in comparison to the others in the series.

However, in re-reading the book before I tackled Deathly Hallows, I realised that the more considered pace of Half-Blood is to its favour when adapting it for a 120-140 minute long film.

I'll always remember how rushed and mutilated Goblet of Fire felt as it tried to cram in everything. Ugh.
