Movie release dates

I haven't been to movies in a month, frankly because there just hasn't been anything that piques my interest. I'm still keen to see Elizabeth: The Golden Age, but that's definitely not something to drag the boyfriend to.

In the coming weeks and months though there's a healthy mix of blockbusters and prestigious award nominees hitting the big screen locally. Here are some of the highlights.

1 February
27 Dresses - Rom-com starring Katherine Heigl as a young woman who has been a bidesmaid 27 times, but just can't seem to find her own Mr Right.

Atonement - A guilt-fuelled romantic drama set against the backdrop of WWII and starring James McAvoy and Keira Knightley. This year's English Patient?

8 February
Cloverfield - The latest in the "when giant monsters attack" movie genre. From the creator of Lost and filmed in the handheld video style. Massive online hype for this one.

Meet the Spartans - Yet another movie spoof, from the makers of Date Movie and Epic Movie. This time 300 is the target. Very, very poorly reviewed.

1408 - Horror film based on a Stephen King story about a sceptical writer (John Cusack) and a haunted hotel room. Also with Samuel L Jackson.

15 February
The Kite Runner - Controversial coming-of-age story based on the bestselling novel, about 2 boys growing up in Afghanistan.

P.S. I Love You - Romantic drama starring Hillary Swank and Gerard Butler about a terminally ill man who plans ahead for his death by writing love letters to his wife.

Jumper - Time travel sci-fi in which a young man discovers an ability to "jump" through time and space. Useful for solving pesky murder mysteries.

Eastern Promises - New thriller from director David Cronenberg, centred on the Russian mafia in London. Viggo Mortensen gives an Oscar nominated performance.

22 February
Michael Clayton - Complex legal drama that pits George Clooney against his own conscience and ambition (as well as a ruthless Tilda Swinton).

Sweeney Todd - Tim Burton's gothic, blood-spattered musical, starring Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham-Carter. Another Oscar nom for Johnny.

Death Proof - Quentin Tarantino's installment in the back-to-back Grindhouse double-feature, released as a solo project here. Kurt Russell terrorises a bevy of young beauties.

Things We Lost in the Fire - Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro team up in this drama about a widow and recovering drug addict who are forced to re-evaluate their lives.

29 February
No Country for Old Men - Highly acclaimed crime drama from the Coen Brothers, about a man who goes on the run with $2 million from a failed drug deal. Lawmen and murderers pursue.

7 March
Sicko - Michael Moore tackles the injustice and greed of the American healthcare industry in his latest controversial documentary. Academy Award nominated.

Charlie Wilson's War - Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts and Philip Seymour Hoffman head up this drama about shady deals to fund the war against the Soviets in 1980s Afghanistan.

There Will Be Blood - Award winning drama about an increasingly ruthless oil tycoon in turn of the century California. Daniel Day Lewis is likely to win the Best Actor Oscar this year.

14 March
Juno - Oscar nominated comedy about a teenager who has to make some very adult decisions when finds herself pregnant. From the director of Thank You for Smoking.

I'm Not There - Unusual Bob Dylan bio-pic in which multiple top stars portray the music legend at different points in his life. Cate Blanchett wows in a gender bending performance, apparently.

21 March
The Spiderwick Chronicles - Family fantasy based on the popular series of children's books. A city family relocate to a country estate where the children discover all sorts of magical creatures and secrets.

The Game Plan - Family friendly comedy starring The Rock as a football player who has to change his self-absorbed bachelor lifestyle when he discovers he has a young daughter.

10,000 BC - Epic adventure set during the prehistoric period, with a young hunter who must battle sabre tooth tigers and poweful warlords to save his love. From the director of Independence Day and Stargate. Filmed in South Africa and Namibia.

The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - The true life story of a successful French journalist who is left paralysed and speechless after a stroke. He tells his life story to transcribers by blinking in agreement to one letter at a time.

28 March
Walk Hard: the Dewey Cox Story - Comedy about a hard-living fictional rock & roll icon in the 1970s, starring John C Reilly and co-written by Knocked Up's Judd Apatow.

I Could Never be Your Woman - An age-gap Rom-com starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Paul Rudd set in the age-conscious TV industry. Finally set for release after 2 years!

The Nanny Diaries - Scarlett Johansson stars in this lighthearted comedy as a college graduate who eschews the business world and goes to work as a nanny for a wealthy New York family.

23 May
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - The adventurous archeologist is back in adventure number 4, outracing Soviets to a mysterious magical treasure in South America.

I've seen 1408 with john cusack, very good... confusing as hell but good...
john cusack plays the skeptic who stays in so called "haunted" hotel rooms and bashes the "it's haunted" tag around that specific room... until he gets to room 1408.. :)
