Indy & Goku

Yes, I'm sure you never thought you'd see those 2 names alongside each other, but it's a slow day for brand spanking new movie news. So, anyway, 2 bits of info for today, related to 2 highly anticipated 2008 releases:

A few weeks on the stale side, but Vanity Fair magazine recently ran an exclusive First Look article on the upcoming Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, set for release on 22 May 2008.

The article is, of course, an interesting read, but more importantly it includes a number of never-before-seen pics of the cast and filmmakers, taken by legend Annie Leibovitz. This includes the first released pic of Cate Blanchett as sinister Soviet operative Agent Spalko. Check out the article here.

Meanwhile, I've been keeping an cautious eye on the live-action Dragonball Z film that is currently being filmed in Mexico. Lord Spaceman is devoting a lot more blog time to covering the film, and is the far bigger fan, but I did my fair share of DBZ viewing in my time - mostly during that mega 6 week+ battle between Goku and the very disturbing Freeza. I gave up after that.

Anyway, looking at these pics off a Spanish language website, the movie looks horribly lame. Like Jean-Claude Van Damme Street Fighter lame! Or Power Rangers lame! I know there are challenges to giving an over-the-top anime series the flesh and blood treatment, but the concept really has potential if it is treated with some *cough* artistic respect.

However, by the look of things, Dragonball is on par with most low budget video game adaptations - D.O.A. anyone? And the actor they have playing Goku is such a weed - that's Justin Chatwin, who you may remember as the obnoxious son from War of the Worlds. Goku is supposed to be buff, not a Karate Kid rip-off in garish colours.

I really hope Dragonball is better than it looks... It's set for worldwide release on 15 August 2008.
