Trailer Tuesday: Wanted

Believe it or not, Wanted is actually based on an adult comic miniseries by Mark Millar. The reason it's a case of believe it or not, is that in researching this big screen adaptation, the much feared words "loosely adapted" keep popping up.

Wanted, the comic series, takes place in a world where super-villains have banded together and eliminated all superheroes. Unchallenged, these villains secretly rule the world, rewriting history in their favour so that there's no evidence the world was once a more hopeful place.

In this context, young Wesley Gibson discovers that his father was one of these super-villains, a deadly assassin called The Killer. Now Wesley himself has been recruited to fill his father's role.


Now either the film makers are keeping their plot cards close to their chest, or the film has taken a big step away from its source material - because very little of the world context comes through in this first Wanted trailer.

Frankly it looks like yet another Matrix clone, mixing the "seize your destiny" message with acrobatics, insane stunts and gunplay.

I hope I'm wrong, because the comic series sounds intruiging - I just may have to add the trade paperback to my Christmas wishlist. Plus, the film has a strong cast, including James "Mr Tumnus" McAvoy, Angelina Jolie, Morgan Freeman and Terence Stamp.


Wanted is set for release on 28 March 2008. I'm sure we'll be hearing a lot more about it before then.

Wesley Gibson is a natural. First time he shot a gun he killed three flies. The comic book was awesome. Loads of action and Wesley was way cool.

Uhm... wrong. Wesley Gibson killed anyone and everyone he felt like killing. :p

Thanks for the comments, Dante. Yeah, I'm definitely gonna check out the graphic novel. Skimming over Mark Millar's bio, he has been doing some stellar stuff of late.

That Civil War miniseries has also piqued my interest even though I'm not normally a Marvel fan.

BTW, I'm totally loving Kingdom Come. Awesomeness!

Weekend report-back: beach, board games and books

So I'm back in the office after a 4 day weekend. And I'm trying not to remind myself that it's almost 3 months until the next public holiday. Bah! Anyway, pop culture didn't play too massive a part in my mini-break. There was braai -ing (expected on National Braai Day), the baking of pretzels in celebration of Oktoberfest ( even if we weren't in Munich this year ), working on the next Girlz 'N' Games comic , and a family lunch to celebrate my mother and cousin's birthdays. A hefty chunk of the weekend however was spent at one of my favourite holiday destinations: the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. We were celebrating a friend's birthday at his family's holiday flat in Southbroom. Movies today, SA!

Despite the fact that 5 new films open in South Africa today, not a single one is worthy of an extended Pick of the Week description. If you haven't seen it yet (like me), go and watch Disney-Pixar's Up instead. If you can't get past a deeply ingrained "grown-up" prejudice against animated films, what about seeking out the Johnny Depp-Christian Bale gangster movie Public Enemies ?
