The Weekly Report Back

This last weekend just seemed to fly by and I’m sitting here now at my desk with a major sleep deficit. *Yawn* Tonight is definitely going to be capped with an early evening, especially since I’m sure our work function tomorrow evening is going to be a semi-wild, boozy affair.

Anyway, I played a lot of World of WarCraft this weekend, largely teaming up with real life friends for some dungeoneering, helping them out with quests and collecting resources for the big money-spinners of my leatherworking profession. We managed to all go up quite a few levels in the process.

Otherwise, on Saturday afternoon I met up with friends at trendy Durban hangout, Bean Bag Bohemia for a pleasant lunch – even though the service was pretty slack and I’m sure we were billed for a few extra drinks that we didn’t receive. It was good seeing most of the Durbs crowd though, as well as an online forum buddy down from Johannesburg. Long tables of people suck though – there inevitably are friends you end up neglecting because you’re just too far away to talk to them.

Anyway, on Sunday evening we headed to Sibaya Casino for a Mixed Martial Arts Challenge. Mostly I was there because our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor was taking part in one of the main heavyweight fights, but it was also my first time attending one of these things, so my curiosity levels were high.

It started off well enough, with some exciting combat and knock out finishes, but then things started to drag. Supposed 5 minute breaks went on for 30 minutes – load shedding was blamed, although all the lights seemed to be working in the venue – and a little Ravi R, the radio DJ who was MCing the event, goes a looooong way.

Apparently organisation is never a priority at these types of things. To give you a better idea of how long the evening ended up being, the Challenge was supposed to start at 6pm, in reality began at 6:45 and ended past 10:30pm. It’s one of the reasons I’m so exhausted today.

So naturally by the time the main heavyweight bouts started, most of the audience were impatient. And these final 3 fights ended up being a bit anti-climactic. Our instructor – one of the few fighters who was unwilling to stick to the tired old stand-up routine of punching and kicking – took his opponent to ground, and submitted him in under a minute with a rear naked choke.

In another match the fighter who was dominating suddenly damaged his arm, and had to forfeit. And in the final face off, a fighter was so badly knocked out that paramedics had to load him onto a stretcher and ship him off to hospital.

So, yeah, that was the weekend in a nutshell. I think I need another few days to recover.
