Retail therapy and The Dark Knight

Thank goodness it's Friday - it's been a very long, stressful, physically and mentally demanding week. I'm holding down the fort at work today, and sitting at my desk feeling quite spaced out right now for some reason. Weird. My fingers aren't even hitting keys in the right order...

Anyway, I do so enjoy online shopping: better prices, better selection and better all-round convenience. But I've had a few "expensive necessities" months so I haven't actually splashed out on luxuries for quite a while; not since around Christmas actually. However, earlier this week I placed a Take 2 order for the following:

Having featured Addams Family Values on the Most Quotable Movies feature a short while ago, I managed to find a Region 1 DVD boxset that includes both The Addams Family and Addams Family Values for the price of one DVD. I'm so looking forward to watching these again...


My other 2 purchases are more in the self-improvement/creative inspiration line.

After I finished the fantastic Ancient Greece-set Gates of Fire, I was browsing around the website of that novel's author Steven Pressfield - and discovered that he had also written a book about disciplined creativity and overcoming self-imposed barriers to achieving your dreams, entitled The War of Art.

I know I'm terrible for putting off doing things like writing my novel/s and just being downright lazy when it comes to working on some of my long-held creative projects, so the online extract really spoke to me... without any of the grating "alternate spirituality" and metaphysical musings I found in Paulo Coelho's The Alchemist. The War of Art was promptly added to my digital shopping basket.


The last book I bought comes from PvP cartoonist Scott Kurtz and assorted other authors and creators, called How to Make Web Comics. Yes, I'm taking Girlz 'N' Games more seriously, and I thought it was a good idea to learn some tips from long-established pros about achieving success (and an income) in the online realm. The book is brand new, having only been released last month.

As some of you know, I’ve been fangirling hard over the new Tomb Raider , the first entry in the video game series since 2008, and ostensibly a reboot for the entire franchise . Taking the form of an origin story, Tomb Raider 2013 depicts the events that transformed a beautiful, if bookish, archaeology graduate into a pistol-packing adventurer with a devil-may-care attitude. Weekend report-back: beach, board games and books

So I'm back in the office after a 4 day weekend. And I'm trying not to remind myself that it's almost 3 months until the next public holiday. Bah! Anyway, pop culture didn't play too massive a part in my mini-break. There was braai -ing (expected on National Braai Day), the baking of pretzels in celebration of Oktoberfest ( even if we weren't in Munich this year ), working on the next Girlz 'N' Games comic , and a family lunch to celebrate my mother and cousin's birthdays. A hefty chunk of the weekend however was spent at one of my favourite holiday destinations: the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. We were celebrating a friend's birthday at his family's holiday flat in Southbroom. So there was much chilling and eating and games playing, as well as kite flying, dolphin spotting and swallowing of saltwater as I flailed around in the choppy, chilly surf. Movies today, SA!

Despite the fact that 5 new films open in South Africa today, not a single one is worthy of an extended Pick of the Week description. If you haven't seen it yet (like me), go and watch Disney-Pixar's Up instead. If you can't get past a deeply ingrained "grown-up" prejudice against animated films, what about seeking out the Johnny Depp-Christian Bale gangster movie Public Enemies ? Hell, you could even go and watch District 9 again. Just stay away from the mediocrity released this weekend. Yeesh.
