A Halloween treat for you!

Today marks 2 special occasions - Halloween, and the return of the Girlz 'N' Games webcomic! You don't want to know how the idea for this admittedly disturbing strip came about, but let's just say it involved a discussion centered on extended periods of celibacy.

Anyway, I'm off to spend the evening watching horror films and devouring tender, marinaded poultry flesh... There's really no better way to celebrate a holiday that has been so commercialised that many of us actually have to do some research to remind ourselves what it actually was originally about.

In keeping with the Halloween spirit, I've been listening to the delicious Nightmare Revisited cover album a lot these last 2 weeks. Definitely check it out if you have a thing for animated cult classic The Nightmare Before Christmas, movie scores, and alternate artists like Marilyn Manson and Korn, as well as their lighter cousins The All-American Rejects and Rise Against.

Listening to the soundtrack has made me very keen for a rewatch of Tim Burton's stop-motion classic. Seeing as it's Halloween, the first 5 minutes of The Nightmare Before Christmas, with its opening musical number, are very appropriate. Hope you all have a great weekend, with lots of treats and not too many tricks.

At the moment my aim with Girlz 'N' Games is to have a new strip appear online fortnightly - I just have to fit it around my full-time job, blogging, after-work sports activities and various other commitments. That's why I can't update any more regularly.

Weekend report-back: beach, board games and books

So I'm back in the office after a 4 day weekend. And I'm trying not to remind myself that it's almost 3 months until the next public holiday. Bah! Anyway, pop culture didn't play too massive a part in my mini-break. There was braai -ing (expected on National Braai Day), the baking of pretzels in celebration of Oktoberfest ( even if we weren't in Munich this year ), working on the next Girlz 'N' Games comic , and a family lunch to celebrate my mother and cousin's birthdays. A hefty chunk of the weekend however was spent at one of my favourite holiday destinations: the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. We were celebrating a friend's birthday at his family's holiday flat in Southbroom. Movies today, SA!

Despite the fact that 5 new films open in South Africa today, not a single one is worthy of an extended Pick of the Week description. If you haven't seen it yet (like me), go and watch Disney-Pixar's Up instead. If you can't get past a deeply ingrained "grown-up" prejudice against animated films, what about seeking out the Johnny Depp-Christian Bale gangster movie Public Enemies ? Hell, you could even go and watch District 9 again. Just stay away from the mediocrity released this weekend. Yeesh.
