Today, South Africa

After last week's dud cinema release schedule, there are 3 high profile movies coming out today to compensate... although their quality is largely questionable.

Doomsday

Filmed partly in South Africa, this film can probably best be described as Mad Max meets Escape from New York meets 28 Weeks Later, i.e. it's a deliberate hodgepodge of multiple cult action, sci-fi and horror flicks. Now I know some people who have loved the film, embracing its over-the-top B-grade crapness, and others who have hated it with a passion. Over at Rotten Tomatoes, Doomsday is sitting at an ambivalent 48%.

I say if you're curious, save this one for a Half Price Tuesday... at a budget Ster Kinekor Junction cinema.

Mirrors

Kiefer Sutherland stars in this Western reimagining of an Asian horror film. Sutherland plays Ben Carson, a washed up cop who finds a job as a security guard at a burnt out department store - which also used to be a psychiatric hospital (when is that ever a good thing in a horror movie?). When Ben starts seeing things in the store mirrors he has to question whether he's cracking up, or if there's some sinister supernatural force at work. I'm betting on the latter.

Mirrors scored a pitiful 15% at Rotten Tomatoes.

Mamma Mia!

If violence and horror aren't your thing, then there's always feel-good musical Mamma Mia! based on the hit theatrical production. The film's plot is incredibly lightweight - a young woman about to get married wants her father to walk her down the aisle... but first she has to find out who he is. So she invites her mother's old lovers to the Greek island where they live. Pretty generic stuff, but it's livened up with irresistible dance-and-sing-along ABBA music, and an impressive cast - some of whom cope with the demands of appearing in a musical better than others (*cough* Pierce Brosnan).

Mamma Mia! is currently sitting at a very average 54% at Rotten Tomatoes.

Yeah, Vhailorz, I saw your post's on the film... That's why I'm very undecided about paying to see this one at the cinema.
