Trailer Tuesday: Get Smart

The over-enthusiastic but hopelessly incompetent secret agent is nothing new to cinema. Rowan Atkinson, Jackie Chan, Eddie Murphy, Owen Wilson, Mike Myers and others have all donned tuxedos (or garish 60s safari suits) and packed pistols in recent years. Now it’s Steve Carell’s turn in the new action-comedy Get Smart.


Here's the plot synopsis:

In "Get Smart," Maxwell Smart (Steve Carell) is on a mission to thwart the latest plot for world domination by the evil crime syndicate known as KAOS.

When the headquarters of U.S. spy agency Control is attacked and the identities of its agents compromised, the Chief (Alan Arkin) has no choice but to promote his ever-eager analyst Maxwell Smart, who has always dreamt of working in the field alongside stalwart superstar Agent 23 (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson).

Smart is partnered instead with the only other agent whose identity has not been compromised: the lovely-but-lethal veteran Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway). As Smart and 99 get closer to unraveling KAOS' master plan-and each other-they discover that key KAOS operative Siegfried (Terence Stamp) and his sidekick Shtarker (Kenneth Davitian) are scheming to cash in with their network of terror.

Given little field experience and even less time, Smart - armed with nothing but a few spy-tech gadgets and his unbridled enthusiasm - must defeat KAOS if he is to save the day.


For the record, Get Smart is another high profile film coming out this blockbuster season that actually has its origins on the small screen (Speed Racer and The X-Files are 2 others).

I didn't know this but Get Smart is actually based on a satirical TV series from the 1960s, created by comedy master Mel Brooks.

Even taking this into consideration though, I'm still decently keen for Get Smart. It looks like solid entertainment for the whole family, combining action, sight gags, some witty comebacks (hopefully not all revealed in the trailer!), and a very appealing cast collective. Most importantly though, Carell seems to be in predominantly deadpan mode in the film... as opposed to resorting to irritating screaming outbursts, as he has done in some of his more mainstream comedies.

Get Smart opens in North America this coming Friday, and in South Africa on 4 July.

Did you not see the cone of silence bit? OUTBURST! :P This looks good. Plus I love the rock in his more comedical roles. But when will he do action again? :(.

Weekend report-back: beach, board games and books

So I'm back in the office after a 4 day weekend. And I'm trying not to remind myself that it's almost 3 months until the next public holiday. Bah! Anyway, pop culture didn't play too massive a part in my mini-break. There was braai -ing (expected on National Braai Day), the baking of pretzels in celebration of Oktoberfest ( even if we weren't in Munich this year ), working on the next Girlz 'N' Games comic , and a family lunch to celebrate my mother and cousin's birthdays. A hefty chunk of the weekend however was spent at one of my favourite holiday destinations: the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. We were celebrating a friend's birthday at his family's holiday flat in Southbroom. Movies today, SA!

Despite the fact that 5 new films open in South Africa today, not a single one is worthy of an extended Pick of the Week description. If you haven't seen it yet (like me), go and watch Disney-Pixar's Up instead. If you can't get past a deeply ingrained "grown-up" prejudice against animated films, what about seeking out the Johnny Depp-Christian Bale gangster movie Public Enemies ?
