Full stomach, empty fuel tank
The weekend seemed to be filled with driving and junk food. Driving in that we had a lot of picking up and dropping off of people to do that related to our activities. And junk food because we seemed to eat a lot of rubbish this weekend – not exactly the kind of fuel I really wanted to be giving my body one week before my BJJ tournament next weekend.
Anyway, Friday was the bf’s birthday and after doing the presents and cake thing in the morning, we celebrated in the evening by going to movies – to see Kung Fu Panda. As always, you can expect my full review up here shortly, but the crib notes version is that the film is very enjoyable, even if it feels incredibly short. The film’s major selling point is its impressive action sequences, probably the most thrilling in an animated film since Pixar’s The Incredibles.
After the movie I stumbled across the Nelson Mandela birthday concert on TV. I don’t know what it is about these annual star-studded events, but they are always so incredibly dull. How you can gather together such an impressive set of musical legends every year, and still bore your audience into unconsciousness I really don’t know. What a snorefest.
On Saturday we headed to Shongweni dam with friends for the bf’s birthday. We enjoyed good company, wors rolls and just managed to beat out the cold, cloudy weather that was settling in that evening.
I didn’t actually play much World of WarCraft this weekend, except for Saturday evening and a portion of Sunday afternoon. In that time I did level my Warlock to Level 66 though (just 4 more levels to reach the top!), and my Paladin jumped 2 levels doing dungeons. Having recently converted another real life friend to WOW Crack, there are finally enough of us to tackle instances without having to put our trust in unreliable strangers needed to pad out the groups.
Speaking of video games, and Blizzard in particular, the big entertainment news of the weekend was the announcement of long awaited hack-and-slash-RPG sequel, Diablo III. Below you can see the cinematic teaser for the game.
Personally, I’m thinking that Diablo III’s big selling point will have to be its unnerving, dark atmosphere and storyline/s. Of course the game will be cool, but in terms of bringing the Action-RPG sub-genre to the 21st Century, Titan Quest has already accomplished that, ironing out some of the old annoyances, revolutionising the skill tree system, going beautifully 3D and adding a lot of spit and polish to boot.
Anyway, on Sunday we woke up exceptionally early, loaded the bf’s grans in the car and headed up to Kloof for the once-a-month Umgeni Steam Railway ride. Getting the old ducks on the train was no problem… getting them off at the Ichanga station on the other side (where a mini county fare and craft market was set up) was more problematic. In the end though, everyone had a very good time. And I’d seriously recommend the activity for any Durbanites who have never experienced the novelty of a steam train ride before, and are looking for a fantastic activity for the whole family. Apart from dinner at Wilson’s Wharf on Sunday evening, that was pretty much the weekend.
