The Weekend
On Friday evening we joined the Durbs crowd for a DVD evening at the flat of Mark’s girlfriend. After watching Brit zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead, we watched Stephen Chow’s Kung Fu Hustle, a truly bizarre, CGI-saturated tribute to martial arts movies.
Essentially the plot revolves around a Shanghai slum in the 1940s under threat from a powerful criminal organisation, The Axe Gang. The thing is, the slum is secretly home to several kung fu masters who are forced out of retirement to defend the local community with their different fighting styles.
It all sounds simple enough, but the film is an unusual mix of everything from Eastern martial arts flicks to Kill Bill to Sin City to Looney Tunes cartoons. It’s a wild entertaining ride, and the combat (sans philosophical mumbo-jumbo) puts the second and third Matrix movies to shame.
I wasn’t in the best mood on Saturday morning, having been woken at 7am, with less than 6 hours sleep (I had to recover the deficit in the afternoon). With my unfinished GEAR column hanging over my head I was unable to fall asleep again.
We ended up at the Pavilion in the mid morning. Paul was looking for new sunglasses and a watch. I browsed around while he made his decision, and found an awesome pair of sunglasses for myself (I even discovered those massive Gucci shades suited me). However, with a mouth-drying R2600 price tag, they ended back on the rack.
Look and Listen had the latest Avril Lavigne album in their store room but were unable to sell it as the CD is only officially available from today. I’ll probably pick up a copy tomorrow. Once in a blue moon I do actually buy CDs, although these days it seems kind of silly. Once I’ve converted the album to MP3, the CD sits on a shelf only to be grabbed now and then for in-car play when I’m feeling lazy. Time to move to digital purchases perhaps?
Anyway, on Saturday evening Paul and I joined my family at a 21st birthday party for a family friend. The theme was German Beerfest, and we all received little William Tell hats to wear. I’m looking forward to wearing them at the next cricket match we attend…
Because Paul and I were pretty much anonymous at the party (at one point we were befriended by a drunk Maritzburg student with the unfortunate nickname of Scrotum) we took advantage of the free booze, awesome food and spent much of the evening bouncing around the dance floor. Paul may not admit this, but he was even dancing to Fergie-licious.
On Sunday we used our Sharks casino vouchers at Sibaya Casino and headed to Gateway for some lunch, sitting outside at Kauai by the Flow Wave and skate park. I finally used my NAG Incredible Connection voucher. It turns out that the Gateway branch has probably the best selection of games out of all the Natal Incredibles. I picked up a copy of the well-reviewed comedy adventure game, Ankh which wasn’t available anywhere else.
We rounded off the weekend with some snoozing while DVD watching – another episode of Family Guy Season 5, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back and the last two-thirds of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
