Girlz 'N' Games webcomic #61: Welcome to the World of... Avatar!

And I'm back with a new Girlz 'N' Games comic! This gaming-film thematic hybrid of a strip will probably be more enjoyable for the World of WarCraft players out there, or at least anyone familiar with MMORPGs (massive multiplayer online role-playing games).

If you don't fall into either category, well, I hope you still get a kick out of the Avatar visuals. It was certainly a challenge to create them - particularly the logo in Panel 1 (which was designed to look like a World of WarCraft loading screen out of interest) and the incredibly detailed flying beasties in Panel 4.

For anyone who really cannot identify the point of this comic - like the guys at console-centric gaming website Lazygamer.co.za apparently - it's really just visually reiterating a comment that I made towards the end of my Avatar film review. Basically, I think it's very easy to view Avatar as an unofficial World of WarCraft film. There are so many striking similarities between the film and the game (particularly in terms of the worlds presented) that anyone familiar with both fantasy projects is likely to assume that James Cameron is one seriously hardcore WOW player... even if Avatar had been gestating in his imagination since the mid-1990s - a good decade before the World of WarCraft phenomenon took off.

Anyway, I am certainly not alone in brooding over the similarities between Avatar and WarCraft. You can check out highly geeky but very interesting comparisons here, here and here. The only real difference between these critiques and my own is that mine ended up taking the form of 4 non-linear, unrelated snapshots that use a mixture of MMORPG speak and Avatar terminology ("skxawng" is Na'vi for "Moron"). I hope you enjoy the comic!

As usual, if you like my latest Girlz 'N' Games comic, please forward it on to your like-minded friends. You can also show your support by joining the Girlz 'N' Games Facebook fan group, which is open to all. The big advantage of joining is that you'll immediately receive an email notification every time a new comic is uploaded.

If this doesn't suit you, you can also follow me on Twitter - I tend to tweet when a comic is in production, as well as provide a heads up when it's about to debut online.

I've never even played WOW or touched a hardcore PC game in years and I got this. Methinks some people are snug under their rocks :p
