2009 Razzie nominations
Now I know everyone (well, the film lovers anyway) is consumed right now with talk about the 82nd Academy Awards and their nominations, which were announced on Tuesday. Personally though, I always find myself sparing a thought for the anti-Oscars, the annual Golden Raspberry Awards, which seek to "honour" the worst movies Hollywood produced during the previous year. Then again I have a perverse fascination with laughable bad, curiously awful movies. Yup, I've even seen Catwoman twice!
Anyway, the Razzie nominations are announced the day before those for the Academy Awards, and the "winners" are unveiled 24 hours before the Oscar ceremony. This year things are slightly different in that not only are awards being dished out for the worst films of 2009 (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Land of the Lost lead the Razzie race with 7 nominations each), but also the biggest train wrecks of the past decade. There really were some massive turkeys in the Noughties.
Looking at this year's nominations, I can understand the dominance of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. It's the obvious, high profile choice. The film was garbage, but in a way it was so bad it was actually entertaining. Critics seemed to treat it more as a joke than anything else. The same however cannot be said for Old Dogs, which received some of the most vicious reviews I read the whole of last year. Although I haven't seen Old Dogs, frankly I'm surprised that it's not the film leading the Worst Movie nominations.

Then I saw Failure to Launch and a deep, inexplicable irritation and hatred was triggered, and I doubt I'll ever be able to recover from it.
