Back from the Berg
Well, it’s Monday morning and I’m sitting back in the office after a weekend away. As usual, after a great break, I’m suffering from the Return to Reality blues mixed with my usual Monday morning “completely out of it” daze.
Of course I don’t want to bore anyone with a tedious recount of my weekend’s activities (particularly if you’re here for pop culture updates and musings), so I’ll let the pics mostly speak for themselves. All my friends on Facebook will, of course, have access to the full online album of pics. The photos here are just a choice selection.
Anyway, after we had 2 people drop out sick in the second half of last week, we decided to save on fuel costs and squeeze all 5 of us into the bakkie for the 2 and a half hour trip. We arrived around 8pm at the Bergview cottage – just next to the Drakensberg Sun Hotel and timeshare.
This is the cottage, followed by a pic of the valley containing the Drak Sun.
It actually wasn’t that cold in the evenings, but we lit a fire in the hearth on both evenings. Likewise, on both evenings we gorged ourselves on dinner, dessert and way too much alcohol. Which naturally made 30 Seconds increasingly hilarious… and made concentrating on Settlers of Cataan a little too demanding for some.
I’m a sleepy drunk though, so on both evenings, I tended to pass out on the couch and then have to be shepherded into bed around midnight.
Unlike our normal camping trips where we’re early to bed and early to rise, this weekend was considerably more lazy. We slept in. Paul and I ate big fry ups for breakfast. Our walks and hikes were pretty short, if sometimes quite steep.
On Saturday afternoon we roamed around the Drak Sun grounds, and went for a paddle on their dam / lake. Our canoe was horribly unbalanced though and with 3 people inside we were terrified of making any swift or strong motions in case we tipped ourselves into the icy water. There was plenty of interesting bird life about, though, including an Egyptian goose and 6 goslings.
And while the guys sat in the hotel’s bar and watching the Tri-Nations Rugby, the girls were out sun tanning and reading by the pool.
So, yeah, a very enjoyable weekend. We were back in Durban, very tired, with bellies full of junk food, by 6pm.
Anyway, seeing as so few people could make it to the Berg, we’re doing something else in celebration of Paul’s birthday this coming weekend. Obviously it’ll be weather dependent, but we’re thinking of driving up to Midmar Dam on Sunday for a braai, and some general rest and relaxation. Anyone interested is welcome to join us – just RSVP to Paul, and we can start sorting out lifts.
