The Weekend and the Week Ahead
The big news of the weekend was Team Pug’s Friday night victory at the Kloof SPCA General Knowledge Quiz. Team Pug, of course, consisted of myself, Paul, Shirley, G, Mark, his sister Diane and Natasha, who found out about the charity fundraiser and spread the news about it.
It really was an entertaining evening, and a lot more mentally gratifying than an evening of clubbing. Everyone got to contribute something to the team’s efforts. Shirley, Mark, Diane and Natasha worked hard all evening on the movie title anagrams section. Anyone who is bored may want to try the following out:
Tong up
Dross oscar
Hire dad
Rat dialog
Lawyers lean rhythm
End global yell
Shoot genie
Speculate shuts us
Saltshaker tired roof
Treats well
Throb gussets
Wrangled deep ninth
Soppy pin arm
Thighs nine
Konga crawler cook
Lapel scabs
Psycho liver bell
Clubber that’s fake
Deathbed stinky moan
Beds my ant
G and I did our bit in terms of identifying film posters, and name that tune (with both G and Mark, for Burn regulars, exhibiting surprising knowledge about Boney M and Tears for Tears). Paul was very good at naming where snippets of movie dialogue came from.
In terms of the General Knowledge questions asked, they included:
What is the capital of Equador?
In what year did Elvis perform his first concert?
What was William Kemmler the first man to do?
Who wrote White Fang?
What is a Quahog?
What does Sonar stand for?
Who said ‘I think therefore I am’?
In what year did the first man reach outerspace?
Who did the thuggees worship in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom?
What are the first 3 words of the Bible?
Anyway, we came first out of 12 teams (of 8 people each), beating our nearest opponents by 1.5 points. It was a tense few moments when that fact was announced and our name hadn’t been announced yet. Probably one of the most gratifying things was that we were the youngest team there. As winners, we received bottles of champagne, Island Style slops, vouchers for Milky Lane, bowling and Adventure Golf, as well as Rocky brand key chains. Afterwards, we celebrated our victory with drinks at the nearby Stoker’s Irish Pub.
Below, you can see some pictures from the event:
Otherwise, Durban was wet and miserable for the rest of the weekend. Apart from assisting Paul with some tech support stuff on Saturday, and colouring my latest Girlz ‘N’ Games comic strip, most of our time was spent lazing about watching DVDs- Undercover Brother, Mean Machine and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, which are all good to very good movies. Solid. We also saw G and Shirley for a while on Saturday evening.
Anyway, the rest of my week is going to busy but boring. I’ve got exam preparation to do for my 4-hour English Gender and Writing exam next Tuesday. It’s an open-book exam, but you do write solidly for the full 2 hours, and making detailed summaries with quotes saves you a lot of time paging through novels and essays for information. In the coming weeks I also need to put some solid work into my Media assignment on forums, which is due on 28 November.
