Trailer Tuesday: Friday the 13th

Right, many horror movie fans have been up in arms since it was announced that Michael Bay's Platinum Dunes film company, which has already brought us remakes of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Amityville Horror, was tackling 1980s slasher classic, Friday the 13th.

Fortunately I'm not one of those overly precious fans.

The teaser trailer really hits the spot as far as my desire for bloody thrills and creepiness is concerned. So my interest in this film has definitely been piqued. Although Halloween's Michael Myers has always been my favourite masked movie maniac, Jason Voorhees comes in a close second - largely because I always found his habit of hacking up horny teenagers "having sexy times" a bit on the cheesy side.

Anyway, according to various interviews, the new Friday the 13th won't be based solely on the 1980 original. Rather, it will combine elements from the first 3 films in the series.

The film's producer Brad Fuller explains: "I think there are moments we want to address, like how does the hockey mask happen. It’ll happen differently in our movie than in the third one. Where is Jason from, why do these killings happen, and what is Crystal Lake?"

Basically the film seems to offer a bit of a Jason origin tale, although the actual storyline seems to be set in contemporary times and involves a group of young adults who decide to explore the old, seemingly abandoned, Camp Crystal Lake.

Anyway, before the new Friday the 13th comes out, I seriously recommend going out of your way to find the original film if you've never seen it. I only caught it on TV for the first time a few years back and was actually impressed. The acting is appalling on the whole (the only recognisable face is a very young Kevin Bacon), but this bottom budget indie horror film has a lot of flair, a lot of gore and a suitably unnerving atmosphere. And the fact that the victim-stalking and murders are typically seen from the perspective of the killer is a clever choice.

Friday the 13th opens on Friday, 13th February 2009 in North America. Hopefully it will open in South Africa around the same time, although no official release date seems to have been set yet.
