Trailer Tuesday: Zack and Miri Make a Porno
I'll admit that Kevin Smith comedies are something of an acquired taste - given their usual focus on twenty- and thirty-something slackers who debate their geeky pop culture obsessions in-between using some of the foulest, most sexually explicit language imaginable. These films can be juvenile, some are definitely better than others, but no matter - I always sit up and pay attention when a new one is coming out. For all their flaws, Smith movies usually contain some genuine comedy gold...
The wonderfully (and controversially) titled Zack and Miri Make a Porno centres on two desperate friends and roommates (Knocked Up's Seth Rogen and Spider-Man's Elizabeth Banks) who decide to earn some extra money, and bail themselves out of bankruptcy, by creating their own adult film, Star Whores. In the process Zack and Miri also discover that their decades-long friendship might be more than just simply platonic.
Scoring a decent 65% at Rotten Tomatoes, Zack and Miri debuted at #2 at the US box office this weekend, behind Disney's ultra family-friendly High School Musical 3. This very strange 1-2 combination just goes to show how polarised America can be when it comes to morality in its entertainment products. Of course this wouldn't normally be an issue, except that I'm sure most of us are very aware of the religious fundamentalism and general conservatism that has become such an issue this US election.
Anyway, a couple of Smith movie regulars pop up in Zack and Miri, and if that wasn't incentive enough to see the film, it also gives cinema goers the chance to see Superman himself, Brandon Routh, getting hot and heavy with another guy. Yes, the Man of Steel is literally gay here!
I have no clue when Zack & Miri Make a Porno will debut in South Africa. It's unlikely to be before the end of the year, as it's missing from the forthcoming attractions lists of the major distributors. I just hope screenings of Zack and Miri start sooner rather than later - I'm in the mood for some deliciously naughty laughs.
Comments
I'm not sold on it. I'm kind of tired of Seth Rogan. I'm also kind of tired of Kevin Smith whining that he gets fat every time he makes a movie.
I do find it funny that Elizabeth Banks played Laura Bush and then Miri in movies that came out about two weeks from each other.
Tennan, thanks for the blog link... I'll be sure to check it out.
