Girlz 'N' Games webcomic #64: Like goth moths to a razor

This Girlz 'N' Games comic is something of a thematic follow-up to the last strip, GNG #63 - which was centred on Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland film. It also continues a "dress up" story arc that appeared in last year's Christmas comic. Basically the character of Erin has taken it upon herself to help the eternally single Dorian hook up. Only movie-loving Erin's approach is somewhat... unconventional.

Really this comic was a chance to do 2 things:

1) Duplicate the dark, twisted and very distinct aesthetic that animator-turned director Tim Burton is famous for. For the record you can check out Burton's official site here for a more indepth look at his work. I don't think I did too bad a job myself - lots of stripes, lots of black, pasty-white skin and big fat stitching. The only thing I couldn't accommodate were spirals and swirls, which pop up just as much as stripes in films like The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Alice. Actually I'm curious to see how many people out there can actually identify the different Burton films and characters being referenced in Dorian's outfit (without cheating). Please leave your answers in the blog comments below.

2) Take a gentle dig at the Tim Burton fangirls out there. Although there obviously aren't as many as Twihards, apparently the Burton fans are similarly passionate, and are keen to lash out at detractors of their favourite director. This was especially true a few weeks' back, when the fangirls (and fanboys admittedly) unleashed their fury on several online reviewers who had given Alice in Wonderland very negative reviews.

I know it's a cliche but I can't help but imagine Burton fangirls look like Helena Bonham Carter, or have modelled themselves on ragdoll Sally in The Nightmare Before Christmas.

hmm, I can't remember all Burton's movies, but from what I can see:
- Batman's suit from... uh, can't remember which Batman movie Burton directed
- Edward scissor hands... hands
- Pin stripe suit worn by that fella in Nightmare before Christmas
- Is it The Mad Hatter's hat?
- And I'm pretty sure those stripey pants are also from its own movie.. Beetlejuice?
- Is the white face makeup from a Burton movie as well?

Hey Riaan, well done, you nailed it! The white face and make-up is copied from the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland - Burton's latest - so it was probably not the most obvious film to spring to mind.

Oh, wait, the hat is actually Willy Wonka's from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
