A busy weekend

Friday evening was probably the one single quiet point all weekend – Paul and I played World of WarCraft and made divine Italian bread rolls from scratch.

Saturday was spent running around, sorting out more things for our overseas trip, including an investigation of Foreign Exchange options (Interesting fact: ForEx has a higher exchange rate on weekends!), and buying some much-needed goodies, including an over-the-shoulder bag and a rainproof jacket. Oh, and I couldn’t resist a copy of the Lonely Planet Greek Islands guide. Yes, I’m one of those tourists – continually wandering around with a much thumbed guide book in my backpack.

On Saturday evening we headed to a friend’s housewarming, having helped them move around a month back. The geekdom level was high, with much discussion of role-playing at a loud volume. The food was excellent, especially the chocolate brownies for dessert, and we got to introduce more people to our boardgame staple, Settlers of Cataan.

It was actually the first time we played Settlers with the 5-6 player rules, which proved interesting. With +4 players, there’s a new intermediate stage between passing the die from one player to the next. In this in-between stage, any player can build or purchase whatever they want, using the cards in their hand (i.e. there is no trading with other players, or the bank). This way you can influence the game and potentially screw people over even if it isn’t your turn.

Saturday was a very late night and we followed it up with a very early Sunday morning, where we went down to the beach for some sea kayaking in the glorious Durban Spring weather. Unfortunately a vicious breeze (blowing out to sea) sprang up and we had to fight against it for ages to get back to shore. It was quite an unnerving experience to be paddling like crazy, shoulders, arms and hands aching from the effort, and making zero progress in reaching land.

The rest of Sunday was spent setting up a network connection between my room and the study. That meant a lot of fiddling with cables and Paul crawling around in the ceiling. And we’re still not finished tacking wires in and neatening things off. The good news though is that we FINALLY have ADSL at home, and it’s functioning on my parent’s new PC as well as mine.

Unfortunately, we forgot to bring the Word of WarCraft patches from Paul’s house, and with our small cap, I’m unable to download the approximately 3GB (*gulp*) of updates. So it will be yet another week without WOW. But perhaps that’s a good thing. Hopefully this "detox" period will give me time to load up Civ City: Rome instead. My Empire beckons...
