Always better on the big screen!
As promised yesterday, here's an updated movie release schedule for South Africa. I must confess I haven't been to movies for a few weeks now - we seem to be going through one of our 'dry' patches at the moment, with just tepid, one-joke comedies like Evan Almighty and yet another Rush Hour on circuit.
7 September (Tomorrow):
No Reservations - Another "opposities attract" romantic comedy with Catherine Zeta Jones and Aaron Eckhart as rival New York City chefs.
I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry - An apparently biteless comedy with Adam Sandler and Kevin James as straight firemen who masquerade as a gay couple.
The Hitcher - Critically panned remake of a cult 1980s thriller. Sean Bean terrorises the couple dumb enough to give him a ride.
14 September:
Footskating 101 - Frum the teem that brung u Crazy Monkey. Yes, a South African rival to silly sports comedies Balls of Fury and Dodgeball.
Nancy Drew - Find out if everyone's favourite teen sleuth really has sand up her vagina! (And if you don't get that reference you're not a South Park fan).
Daywatch - The sequel to the surprise Russian fantasy-horror film, focused on vampires and wizards, or something...
The Last Legion - Another attempt to Roman-ise the King Arthur story. Didn't they watch that Clive Owen snooze-fest?
21 September:
Disturbia - A Hitchcock-inspired thriller for 21st Century teens. Transformers' Shia LaBeouf as a teenager who suspects his neighbour is a serial killer.
Bratz: The Movie - Like, those ugly dolls, like, finally have their own real-life movie. Expect lotsa tweeny angst about the pressures of going to high school!
Ratatouille - Pixar's latest, from Brad Bird, the genius behind The Incredibles. A rat and a human, who both dream of becoming chefs, form an unlikely alliance in a Parisian restaurant.
28 September:
Knocked Up - An exceptionally well-reviewed comedy about a slacker and career woman who have to contend with a pregnancy as a result of a one-night stand. From The 40 Year Old Virgin's Judd Apatow.
The Brave One - Jodie Foster does the gun-toting Death Wish thing, seeking revenge for a brutal attack that kills her fiance and leaves her close to dead.
5 October:
TMNT - Finally South Africa gets to see this CGI-animated re-imagining of those mutant heroes in a half-shelf. Hopefully it isn't too kiddified.
Shoot ‘Em Up - Clive Owen is a pistol-packing anti-hero in this non-stop action thriller. Apparently entertaining in the Sin City mould.
Daddy Day Camp - Cuba Gooding Jnr in a wretched family comedy, that's a follow-up to Daddy Day Care.
12 October:
Stardust - The star-studded big screen adaptation of Neil Gaiman's fantasy novel. Expect quirky humour, romance and sword-fighting.
In The Valley Of Elah - Tommy Lee Jones, Susan Sarandon and Charlize Theron investigate the disappearance of a Iraqi War veteran. Critical buzz is circling.
19 October:
Resident Evil: Extinction - The Resident Evil franchise goes all Road Warrior for the third installment of Milla Jovovich kicking zombie ass.
The Breed - College students (including Michelle Rodriguez) face off against genetically modified attack dogs on a deserted island. Seriously.
26 October:
Georgia Rule - Mega-chick flick that teams Jane Fonda with Felicity Huffman and Lindsay Lohan as a femme-centric family with a lot of attitude.
