Trailer Tuesday: Aliens Vs Predator 2: Requiem

I'll admit it. When it comes to video game to film adaptations, I tend to feel a tad obliged to watch the finished product. Unless it's Dead or Alive, of course.

So yes, I did actually pay to see the appalling Alien Vs Predator film - which totally missed the point of either iconic sci-fi/horror series. And it was PG-13 to boot. After that monstrosity I really hoped that the franchise would stay as frozen as the T-Rex Alien Queen. But no. AVP made enough money at the box office, and tacked on a cliff-hanger ending, to ensure the making of a sequel: Aliens Vs Predator 2: Requiem.

Bearing in mind that the above is one of those unusual R-rated trailers, so it will be more bloody than usual, it certainly proves that AVP2 will be gloriously "No Under 16" violent - and therefore closer in spirit to the 2 original, separate film series. Sure, this trailer seems to have revealed every single gory death and jump moment in the film, but it looks like gratifying action-horror all the way.

It's highly likely that in AVP2 the human characters will be just as undeveloped as in the first film, but at least this time they'll be running around the forests of rural America (as opposed to a stupid mechanical temple) as they're picked off by the warring Alien races. And Predator fans look like they're in for a treat as the "hero" impales and double-headshots his way through humans, aliens and predaliens alike.

It doesn't seem like a stretch to say that AVP: Requiem follows directly on from the first film, with the newly spawned Predalien wreaking havoc, and causing the Predator spaceship to crash back to Earth.

I'm still warily optimistic about AVP2, but it does seem somewhat better than the first. I don't know whether I'll bother paying to see it at the cinema, though.

Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem is set for release in the US on Christmas Day.

I was horribly disappointed with both the fourth Alien movie and AvP. They both demonstrated a dismal lack of familiarity with the finer points of the Alien IP (and in AvP's case the Predator IP as well).
Despite that, I can't help but look forward to a new Alien movie, I have to cling to the hope that maybe this time they'll get it right. Based on that trailer, we may actually be in luck. It certainly seems to have more of a Predator 2/Alien feel to it. I'm holding thumbs.

Oh, and I have to nitpick here ;)
AvP is not strictly a game adaptation. The appearance of an Alien skull in a shot in Predator 2 (possibly a joke by the props department) led to early speculation of a film that would tie the two Fox properties together. Many fan stories and even graphic novels followed, with supposed 'confirmed film scripts' surfacing on a regular basis. The brilliant Alien versus Predator game was probably inspired by some of that fan fiction.
