The Simpsons Movie

It’s actually very difficult to comment on The Simpsons Movie because essentially it is one very extended episode of the iconic TV series.

If you’re a fan of the show then chances are you’ll enjoy yourself. If not, then don’t bother. Because the Simpsons Movie doesn’t try anything new now that everyone’s favourite, yellow, dysfunctional family is up on the big screen. Which is perhaps a good thing, after all... South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut alienated a lot of people with its unexpected foray into musical comedy.

The Simpsons Movie contains many laugh-out loud moments, and for once the trailer hasn’t spoiled the best gags and one-liners. In fact, it’s probably justifiable to say that the humour in The Simpsons Movie is significantly tauter than in most recent episodes of the series. This is no doubt helped by creator Matt Groening and co. recruiting many of the Simpsons best writers to script the film. The result is plenty of laughs and a number of surprisingly touching moments. Marge and Homer’s relationship is treated with especial care.

Pretty much every Springfield resident pops up in The Simpsons Movie, but they mostly have cameo appearances. The film is very much focused on the Simpson family themselves as they struggle with their new pariah status in Springfield, as well as a dangerous government foe.

Chances are that you’ll have fun with The Simpsons Movie. If you, like me, grew up with the characters then it’s like having a good time with old friends. Just don’t enter the cinema expecting the most mind-blowing, unforgettable entertainment. Because, much like the TV series, The Simpsons Movie is a pleasant 90-minute diversion that will flit across your mind and then quite easily vanish from your memory.
