Girlz 'N' Games webcomic #72: Something for the Starhards

In all honesty you can apply the above Girlz 'N' Games comic to the release of pretty much any high profile video game. Call of Duty. Gears of War. The latest World of WarCraft expansion. And, of course, yesterday's worldwide release of StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty - arguably the most highly anticipated real-time strategy game (RTS), if not ANY video game, of 2010.

Fans have been waiting 12 years for Blizzard Entertainment to finally release the sequel to 1998's StarCraft. StarCraft is of course a seminal title in the RTS genre, for its strategic gameplay AND the fact that it helped turn turned video gaming (in South Korea especially) into a professional, star-making sport.

Given the StarCraft II excitement I've witnessed recently in real life and online, I couldn't help but think that all the giddy, frothy mouthed StarCraft fans are oddly reminiscent of Twihards - especially those who attended special midnight functions so that they could be first to get their hands on the game during the opening minutes of 27 July. So let's just call these guys Starhards! And yes, they can be as temperamental as Twihards - as this 2009 Girlz 'N' Games comic reveals.

Anyway, I'm sure there are many gamer widows and widowers out there who can identify with the latest Girlz 'N' Games comic. The kind of neglect depicted happens regularly. In fact, I actually had the basic idea for this strip back in 2007 when Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars was released - and I experienced something similar.

Apparently pretty pixels and onscreen action can be more engrossing than your significant other... even if it's just until the novelty wears off.

In terms of critiquing GNG #72 from a technical standpoint, I'm relatively happy with how Scarlett Johansson came out - especially since the girl has some very odd, oversize features that are hard to capture without looking monstrous. On the other hand, Erin's terran marine armour was fiddly to sketch but I'm very proud of the final result... In fact, I'm so proud, I'm posting up the full sketch, without Todd's big ol' noggin blocking out a lot of the detail.
