Watchmen character pics

Ah, what a fantastic start to Friday. Get up nice and early, plan to just beat the morning rush… and discover your 2 week old, R300+ front tyre is flat. The only good thing is that it didn’t decide to blow last night while I was driving up or down the death magnet that is Field’s Hill, otherwise they’d be pouring me out of a body bag into a coffin right about now.

Thing is, I’m not sure if the flat tyre is the result of bad construction, or from hitting one of the many holes in our local roads. The damage could easily have been inflicted when I drove past a burst water pipe last night. Flowing dirty water is an excellent form of camouflage for potholes and ragged curbs.

To top it all I pull in at the petrol station this morning to put air in the spare tyre… and learn that their compressor is broken. Whoo hoo, gotta love South Africa, land of broken everything.

Anyway, on a less frustrating note, I was very excited yesterday when the first images of the Watchmen cast, in their superhero outfits, appeared on the official site. I love the direction they’ve taken with the costumes – faithful to the source material (well, with the exception of Ozymandias), but also credible considering every one of these heroes is 100% superpower free, relying instead on extensive physical training, and technology, to fight crime. I'm especially partial to the looks of Silk Spectre and Nite Owl, in his cool Batman knock-off outfit.

Here’s a brief profile of each Watchmen character.

The Comedian (played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan)

The only one of the older generation of masked heroes still in action... and the most immoral. The Comedian escaped the US government’s imposed ban on costume wearing vigilantes by becoming a government military operative. Without censure, the brutal Comedian is free to do whatever he wants, and that includes murder, rape and the execution of his pregnant girlfriend.

Ozymandias (played by Matthew Goode)

With amazing physical abilities and a genius IQ, Ozymandias is the most popular of the new generation of heroes. Having unmasked himself just before the hero ban, Ozymandias had cashed in on his fame with toy lines, fragrances and life-changing self-help books.

Rorschach (played by Jackie Earle Haley)

The only new generation vigilante still in action, the mentally unstable Rorschach lives in hiding from the police as he continues to bring his uncompromising, black and white vision of justice to the streets. Disgusted by the corruption of humanity, Rorschach dishes out beatings and deaths with ease.

Silk Spectre (played by Malin Akerman)

The Silk Spectre was groomed for crime fighting from an early age by her mother, the original Silk Spectre. However, for all her talent, this young woman’s heart isn’t really in heroics, and in recent years she’s been content to be the live-in girlfriend of the only “real” superhero, Dr Manhattan.

Nite Owl (played by Patrick Wilson)

Of all the masked vigilantes, Nite Owl has taken the superhero ban the hardest. Now the overweight hero sits at home gazing wistfully at his increasingly dusty crime fighting technology and writing thoughtful academic texts on owls. He secretly admires and supports Rorschach for his refusal to retire.

No pic has yet to appear online of Watchmen’s only “true” superhero, Dr Manhattan, a nuclear scientist who finds himself transformed into a god (basically) after a botched experiment. Dr Manhattan will be a CGI character, using the motion-captured performance of actor Billy Crudup. Crudup will also be playing the scientist before his transformation.

Watchmen is due for release at the beginning of June 2009.
