Bolding going where many have gone before...

I'm no Trekkie. Well, I used to watch The Next Generation, and that related series of films, but when it comes to sci-fi geekiness I've always prefered George Lucas's Star Wars universe. Must have been those cute, fluffy-bum ewoks appealing to my girlie sensibilities.

Anyway, the following piece of info just made me a helluva lot more excited for the 2008 Star Trek "remake" (focused on Captain Kirk and Co's early years, and directed by Lost's J.J. Abrams). Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz's Simon Pegg is set to play the Enterprise's engineer, Montgomery "Captain, we don't have the power" Scott. This is according to Ain't It Cool News.

It was also announced the other day on the same site that Chris Pine is in negotiations to play Captain Kirk. You would have seen Pine most recenty in ensemble crime caper Smokin' Aces as one of the chainsaw-wielding neo-Nazi brothers.

Meanwhile, Zachary Quinto, who plays Heroes' villainous (but surprisingly sexy) Syler, is on board as emotionless Vulcan Spock.

And apparently Eric Bana is playing the film's villain, someone called Nemo.
Is Star Trek supposed to be filled with so many Hollywood hunks?

"I cast Magile Missile!"

Oh, and Stardust is FINALLY released in South African cinemas today. Brace yourself for Michelle Pfeiffer in all her witchy omnipotence - she's the film's highlight apparently. Hopefully I'll be able to catch the film before the end of the weekend, although I think Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is on the negotiated movie agenda for tonight.

For the record, this is also Paul's last weekend in town before he's away working in Chile for a full month. However, at this point the Durbs crowd's chances of seeing him are probably as limited as mine - yup, Paul's got work-related responsibilities again this Saturday and Sunday, which are clashing with my assorted family crises of the moment.

Thanks for the heads up on the competition. I'm gonna have to buy a new PC just to play it if I win. :)

I hope you enjoy TMNT, I know I did, but my friends didn't. :(

I'm gonna see Stardust tonight at Musgrave, I hope its good.

Stardust looks cool, give us a shout when you want to go see it.

Oh, and you might not realise this, but old William Shatner was something of a sex symbol in his hey-day, as dashing space captain James T Kirk. Star Trek wasn't always purely the realm of the hardcore geeks. Knowing that fact makes watching Boston Legal even funnier though.

That is true. Star Trek was very popular with female viewers. And falling more on the "geek" side of things I think Trekkies as a group were always more gender balanced than their Star Wars counterparts...

What did you think of Stardust, Lord Spaceman?
