Jiu-Jitsued out

This last weekend was the first weekend of Paul being away in the UK. The emptiness hasn’t set in yet, largely because I’ve been so busy so far this June.

Friday

I stayed late at work just socialising by the boardroom bar. It turns out that every year the company throws a huge Vodacom July party, hiring out and decorating a tent at the racecourse. Everyone has to come dressed up according to the decoration theme. Although I always bet on the July, I’ve never been to the event, so this will be my first time at the races and I’m really looking forward to it. Partners are also invited so Paul will be coming to what apparently every year degenerates into a massive piss up.

Seeing as I had to be up early on Saturday morning, I had a quiet evening at home on Friday. I loaded and played some F.E.A.R, which truly is one of the best games of recent years. Every time you think it’s starting to get ‘samey’ something will happen to throw the game in a new direction, or rejuvenate the freaky factor. In terms of atmosphere, and scares, F.E.A.R. beats Doom 3 hands down.

I also finally got around to watching The Grudge. Although I was disappointed by the very ending, as well as the tame revelation of what triggered The Grudge, the film is a helluva lot better than The Ring. Although Sarah Michelle Gellar has less screen time than her top billing suggests (the film covers several interlinking stories of people haunted by The Grudge), her performance, free of Buffy perkiness, gives me confidence in her ability to portray American Mcgee’s Alice. Whenever they get around to finally filming it.

Saturday

On Saturday I spent the whole day at the 1st Africa Cup Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Championships, held at the upper level of the IMAX theatre at Gateway. The event was surprisingly very well attended, as the photos below show. Penny’s mother Sue and I ended up as score keepers, and watching every match was really informative, with some being very entertaining- the one guy managed to be lifted, putting his whole weight on his arm, which was already in a potentially elbow-snapping lock.

Micah lost by a single point in his fight with Jason (a prat, and you know how I feel about arrogant men) of Cape Town’s Gracie Barra Club. This said, Novagen, Micah’s club, emerged as the winning club when points where accumulated at the end of the day.

An interesting moment during the day: Although I avoided eye contact once I spotted him, Richard ‘The Dick’, wretched former project manager at Evil Corp, was briefly part of the crowd. And he’s still wearing that funny old blue and grey tracksuit top!

After the tournament, 14 or so of us went for a pizza and pasta dinner at M&A.

Sunday

My lazy day! Well, kind of. After sleeping in late (finally!), I spent a good portion of the day reading outside in the 4 of so hours of sunlight our freezing house receives in Winter. After that I sorted out the picture gallery on Micah’s Novagen website, and finally finished the site. It is now uploaded and online at:

Oh, and in case anyone was interested, here’s me in my boiler suit…er… gi.

Mine is all white. Just need to get it. My sensie is still in proceedings of ordering it.

If you let your hair hang over you face you will look scary like that grudge chick. Hehe. Try it before a competition.

Peace out
