Psychological Profile by iPod

I saw this over at Nat’s The Film Experience and thought I’d give it a try. Setting my little black 4GB Nano to Shuffle, the first 15 songs played gave me answers to the following important questions:

1) How does the world see you?

The Might of Rome (Hans Zimmer, Gladiator)

This piece accompanies the first shots of Ancient Rome as the camera breaks through the cloud cover; followed by the petal-strewn procession through city by Joaquin Phoenix’s new emperor. So apparently I appear powerful and in control to the world… Ha ha.

2) Will I have a happy life?

Desert Rose (Sting)

I dream of rain
I dream of gardens in the desert sand
I wake in vain
I dream of love as time runs through my hand

I dream of rain
I lift my gaze to empty skies above
I close my eyes
The rare perfume is the sweet intoxication of love

A beautiful, exotic sounding song about dreaming and longing; so I’m going to spend my life yearning…

3) What do my friends think of me?

My World (Avril Lavigne)

Can’t help if I space in a daze,
My eyes tune out the other way,
I may switch off and go in a daydream,
In this head my thoughts are deep,
Sometimes I can’t even speak,
Would someone be and not pretend
I’m off again in my world!

My friends apparently think I’m a dreamer who spends too much time in her head, and is attached to her roots.

4) Do people secretly lust after me?

Meant to Live (Switchfoot)

We were meant to live for so much more
Have we lost ourselves?
Somewhere we live inside

We want more than this world’s got to offer
We want more than this world’s got to offer
We want more than the wars of our fathers
And everything inside screams for second life

Um, I’ll take all that cynical self-absorbed response as a ‘no’ to me having secret admirers.

5) How can I make myself happy?

As I Lay Me Down (Sophie B Hawkins)

As I lay me down to sleep
This I pray
That you will hold me dear
Though I’m far away
I’ll whisper your name into the sky
And I will wake up happy

Ye olde ‘happiness through love and companionship’ message.

6) What should I do with my life?

Tourniquet (Evanescence)

I’m dying,
Praying,
Bleeding,
Screaming.

Am I too lost to be saved ?
Am I too lost ?

My God! my tourniquet,
Return to me salvation.

Interesting… Seems I have to turn to religion to save myself from ‘crimson regret’…

7) Will I ever have children

Not Meant for Me (Static X)

The jury is coming
Coming to tear me apart
All this bitching and moaning
Come on it's on

I'm trapped in this world
Lonely and fading
Heartbroke and waiting
For you to come
We are stuck in this world
That's not meant for me
For me

A strong negative… And I thought I could at least have one child.

8) What is some good advice for me?

Not Gonna Get Us (Tatu)

Starting from here, lets make a promise
You and me, let’s just be honest
We are gonna run, nothing can stop us
Even the night, that falls all around us

Soon there’ll be laughter and voices
And the clouds over the mountains
We’ll run away on roads that are empty
Lights from the airfield shining above you

Nothing can stop us, no no I love you
They are not gonna get us

I like this advice from the Russian pseudo-lesbians: Don’t let yourself be put down in any area of your life. Be determined and pursue happiness even if it means fleeing…

9) How will I be remembered?
A Journey in the Dark (Howard Shore, The Fellowship of the Ring)

This track accompanies the Fellowship’s exploration of the Caves of Khazad Dum. It’s something of a sinister piece that starts off slowly and reaches a dramatic and sudden climax before ending. Makes for something of an interesting life trajectory.

10) What’s my signature dance song?
The Portrait Gallery (John Williams, Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban)

The most medieval sounding track on the album, so I suppose that suggests I’m something of a traditionalist into line and circle dances.

11) What’s my current theme song?

Stuck in the Middle with You (Stealers Wheel)

Yes I'm stuck in the middle with you,
And I'm wondering what it is I should do,
It's so hard to keep this smile from my face,
Losing control, yeah, I'm all over the place,
Clowns to the left of me, Jokers to the right,
Here I am, stuck in the middle with you.

One of my favourite classics… Fantastic for summing up a frantic life of confusion where all you can do sometimes is laugh at the craziness around you.

12) What do others think my current theme song is?

The World is Black (Good Charlotte)

And everywhere you go it's just a different place
You get the same dark feeling
See the same sad faces
No one really cares that this is happening

We come into this world
And we are all the same
And in that moment there's no one to blame

But the world is black
And hearts are cold
And there's no hope
That's what we're told
And we can't go back
It won't be the same
Forever changed
By the things we've seen

Pessimistic message couched in an up-tempo song. So perhaps others sense I keep my dark side hidden behind a (generally) amiable façade.

13) What shall they play at my funeral?

Star Wars Main Theme (John Williams, Star Wars)

This one I really don’t understand… I’ve seen all the films, and own the first 3 (in original form) but I didn’t expect geeks to be waving plastic lightsabres and making ‘jjjjwaaaw’ noises at my funeral. At least it’s an uplifting, inspiring score....

14) What type of men do I like?

Everyme (Placebo)

Sucker love is heaven sent.
You pucker up, our passion’s spent.
My hearts a tart, your body’s rent.
My body’s broken, yours is spent.

Carve your name into my arm.
Instead of stressed, I lie here charmed.
Cuz there’s nothing else to do,
Every me and every you…

I know I’m selfish, I’m unkind.
Sucker love I always find,
Someone to bruise and leave behind.

Apparently I’m into abusive guys with a lot of pent-up frustration and aggression.

15) How’s my love life?

A Hard Teacher (Hans Zimmer, The Last Samurai)

A gentle and contemplative track… so a similar love life, which is just fine by me.
