Trailer Tuesday - Battle: Los Angeles

As I mentioned the other week, 2011 is shaping up as a big year for extraterrestrial activity at the movies. One such alien-centric action film out this year is Battle: Los Angeles, which looks like it offers a combination of Independence Day's exhilarating man vs. alien warfare, War of the Worlds's desperate civilian struggle for survival and District 9's "on the ground" grittiness.

Aaron Eckhart stars as a Marine staff sergeant who has to lead a platoon of soldiers, including Michelle Rodriguez's technical sergeant, in a life-or-death battle against alien invaders on the streets of Los Angeles... where civilians are frequently caught in the crossfire. Battle: Los Angeles theorises that the real life 1942 Battle of Los Angeles - in which LA's anti-aircraft forces were mobilised against a never identified foe - and various other UFO sightings of the 2oth Century were all precursors to a large scale invasion. The teaser trailer makes this especially clear.

It's been 15 years since ID4 was released in all its cheesy, overblown glory, and it's fantastic to see the military facing off against extraterrestrial enemies again on the big screen. Especially since Battle: Los Angeles seems to have adopted a more realistic approach to proceedings. This movie definitely has a lot of potential and I'm expecting it to be one of the first surprise hits of 2011.

Battle: Los Angeles releases in the United States on 11 March. Unfortunately there has been no indication yet when the film will open in South Africa.
