Girlz 'N' Games webcomic #82: Feel the Love

I received a rather unusual Christmas present in 2010. Starting 23 December, the hit counter of my dedicated Girlz 'N' Games site went through the roof. There were well over a hundred comments to moderate, and several emails to read. Unfortunately though, the response to the Christmas comic (and some other strips) was for the large part hardly what you would call positive.

There was very little in the way of constructive criticism. Instead I rather wish I had received a dollar for every time in the past two weeks that I’ve been called a worthless cunt who should A) die B) get raped C) develop cancer or, most commonly, D) stop making comics.

I discovered that Girlz ‘N’ Games #81 had been posted up, among other places, at the video game section of 4chan – the largest English language imageboard on the Net – as well as being introduced into the infamous Ctrl+Alt+Del webcomics thread over at the Something Awful forums. Neither of these sites are populated with people known for their mild opinions.

So, yeah, I thought I’d link one critically reviled thing to another – namely three of the biggest disappointments of the festive film season.

Yep, I do enjoy reading your comics, and I know you wont give up. Yes I had to go through the links provided to understand the Christmas one. I'm glad to see you take it(critisism) in your stride.

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Queer Icon (Part 4)

Part 4: The mystery of Lara Croft’s sexuality “Now what’s a man gotta do to get that kind of attention from ya?” – Larson Conway (Tomb Raider, 1996) Despite being an icon for many queer pop culture consumers, Lara Croft’s own sexual orientation remains ambiguous. Outside of the Top Cow comics and live-action films – where Lara is blatantly heterosexual, with a fondness for slightly scruffy bad boys (who keep betraying and hurting her) – the character comes across as primarily asexual. Following on from the first post in this series , you may realise that I have a very definite type. Anyway, today we profile model-turned-actress Rhona Mitra . This 36 year old Briton is of English, Irish and Indian descent. You'll have seen her pop up on the big and small screen multiple over the past decade and a half, although Mitra's claim to fame is that she was the second ever model (some say first if you rule out "unofficial"  Nathalie Cook ) to play iconic video game character Lara Croft . From 1997-1998, Mitra could be found in PR material, as well as at trade shows, events and conventions as a flesh-and-blood embodiment of Tomb Raider 's kick-ass archeologist lead. There have been many official Lara Croft models over the years , but as far as I'm concerned Mitra remains the best.
