Monday is funday, hooker bitches

Here's something light and fluffy to overcome the Monday blues this morning: True Blood in 60 Seconds, a very well made, spoiler-free parody that forms part of Babelgum's In 60 Seconds series. Mostly I'm sharing it though because it features my new favourite term of endearment: hooker bitch!

Speaking of True Blood, HBO's insanely popular supernatural drama series, the third season of the show is about to wrap next week in the United States. True Blood will be returning to South African TV screens in October. Unfortunately though, the series will apparently no longer be screening on popular, widely available and SA's original pay channel MNET. Instead, True Blood will be dumped on the much lesser watched MNET Action channel, which forms part of DSTV's satellite TV bouquet of channels.

I know that most middle-class and upper middle-class locals these days have satellite TV anyway, but I'm sure there will be many disappointed True Blood fans out there now cut off from their fix because of the channel change. Alternatively, if the fans have DSTV and don't religiously scan the various channels' schedules they're likely to miss the show they already enjoy, or are curious to watch for the first time. I know I've already endured the same frustrations in regards to Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Season II, V, House and Caprica.

Anyway, I'm 7 episodes into True Blood Season III, and without giving anything away, this is definitely the most intense season of the show so far - with a hefty chunk of the goofball Southern humour sacrificed in favour of graphic moments and shocking twists. I'd also label Season III the Destructive Relationships season. Literally every single character is trapped in a bad relationship, whether romantic or familial. Tara takes the cake though with a nutty supernatural beau who displays Edward Cullen's girlfriend obsession and over-protectiveness taken to such a blackly comic extreme you have to wonder if the makers of True Blood are having a dig at the Twilight series.

It's also worth adding at this point that people who don't want to read Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse books - on which True Blood is based - in case they spoil the TV series for themselves, have little to worry about. Season III of the TV series is NOT a faithful word-for-word adaptation of book #3, Club Dead. Along with introducing its own unique elements, the small screen adaptation lifts characters and plot points from across the 10 book series; often twisting them to the show's needs. So, for the record, you can happily watch the TV series and read the books knowing that you're always in store for a surprise. The novels and TV show are tied so loosely at this point they're practically separate entities.

DSTV and MNET have been pushing people off MNET Analogue to Satellite for years now.

A cheaper option if you only have MNET currently is to cancel your analogue subscription, get a DSTV dish and get the DSTV compact baroque - it is roughly half the price of MNET on it's own and although you lose MNET itself you get MNET Action, MNET Series, MNET Stars and a number of other channels.

You may end up seeing some new MNET shows a month or so later than before, movies have a bit longer of a wait, but you will not miss anything that appears on MNET.

Actually looking at the other DSTV bouquet options (without MNET) I would be surprised if MNET has a large percentage of viewer-ship more than MNET Series and MNET Action together

True Blood rocks! It's by far the best show on tv at the moment. I can't wait for the season finale next Sunday! This season definitely contains some of the craziest scenes ever! I still can't get over the ending to episode 9. It is quite literally the most stunning and awesomely outrageous ending ever!

Michael, you make a very good point. I always dismissed DSTV Compact in the past but given the changes in channel line-ups, it actually seems to be improving a lot. I still wish you could choose the channels that go into your bouquet though. Personally I wouldn't want more than 10 of the dozens on offer:P

Kate, I need episodes 11 and 12 from you desperately!:)
