Movies opening in SA, today: Toy Story 3 time!

Although it's another busy weekend at the cinema, with 7 new films being released in South Africa, it's still another "meh" set of movie debuts. It's been well over a month since I've felt a burning desire to rush out on opening night for a new release, and that seems unlikely to change any time soon. This year's midyear blockbuster season is turning out to be a real dud.

But I digress.

Movies opening locally today include Hindi mythological-drama Raavan; the latest collaboration between acclaimed Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar and Penelope Cruz, entitled Broken Embraces (82% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes); and Death at a Funeral (38% Fresh), which is an American remake of the riotous 2007 British comedy of the same name. This time with Chris Rock, Danny Glover, Zoe Saldana and Martin Lawrence.

For anyone in the market for some action sci-fi, there's the distinctly B-grade Mutant Chronicles (16% Fresh), loosely based on the post-Apocalyptic roleplaying game of the same name. Michael Cera fans meanwhile may want to check out their favourite dweeb in quirky alter-ego comedy Youth in Revolt (69% Fresh), based on the novel by C.D. Payne. And then there's the herpes of South African soap operas: Egoli: Place of Gold, making the leap to the big screen. It took almost 2 decades to kill off the wretched series, but now it's back for its supposed swansong - with the usual combination of secrets and strippers that the soapie hauls out whenever it wants to appear "edgy" and "realistic."

That then leaves really only one movie as my pick of the weekend. And that's Toy Story 3. Currently sitting at 100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, the third entry in Pixar-Disney's groundbreaking animated film franchise is one of the best reviewed movies of the year so far - surpassing even How to Train Your Dragon, that other CGI family film from rival studio DreamWorks.

Deftly mixing humour and heart by all accounts, Toy Story 3 centres on that day Woody (Tom Hanks), Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) and all the other toys have been dreading for years - the day Andy grows up and heads off to college. Accidentally shipped off to a daycare where rough play is the rule and not the exception, the toys plan a return to Andy before it's too late.

You can watch the trailer for Toy Story 3 and read my earlier thoughts on the film here. For the record, the movie will be screening in traditional format as well as 3D.

Cannot wait to see Toy Story 3! I've yet to be disappointed by a Pixar film and with Wall-E and Up having set the bar rather high I'm interested to see how Toy Story 3 compares.

Merkaba, I've been hearing very good things about Toy Story 3. This said, the comments about it do seem to vary between "Perfection!" and "It's good and enjoyable, but not amazing." I guess we'll have to watch it ourselves to find out which is more accurate.

Dante, ha! I knew that pic would so sell the movie to you:)

I wondered why I recognized the Mutant Chronicles trailer - another movie that took almost 2 years to reach us.

Was not that keen on Toy Story 3; based on reviews I now may give it a view in a couple of weeks.
I also can't wait to watch toy story 3! I was waiting for that from long times. I will go tomorrow definitely.
