Movies today, SA!
Well, considering last Friday was a public holiday, I missed outlining the new movie releases for the weekend of 10 April.
For the record these were:
1) The FOURTH movie in the braindead Fast & the Furious saga, simply called Fast & Furious (26% on Rotten Tomatoes)
2) Dragonball: Evolution (14% on Rotten Tomatoes), a much maligned live-action American film based on the Japanese Anime
3) Tornado and the Kalahari Horse Whisperer, another local drama from the makers of Faith Like Potatoes and Hansie. Expect lots of troubled country bumpkins and slo-mo horse riding scenes.
Out of these films, the one I would most likely watch is Dragonball, and I would be watching it in disguise... at home on TV... in a year and a half's time.
Anyway, today there are 4 high profile new releases in South Africa.
First up is big screen comic adaptation The Spirit, from Sin City and 300 creator Frank Miller. Based on Will Eisner's groundbreaking cross-genre comic, which dates all the way back to 1940, the Spirit focuses on a young cop who is a victim of crime, dies, and returns to life as a masked vigillante. The film is supposed to be visually stunning but otherwise completely nonsensical... and really weird. Alas, it scored only 14% on Rotten Tomatoes and has apparently been considered Razzie Award worthy. Oh, Samuel L. Jackson is the villain, and Eva Mendes and Scarlett Johansson provide eye candy.
If you are the parent of a tween, chances are you'll be dragged to 17 Again this weekend, which stars High School Musical's Zac Efron (SQUEE!) and Friends star Matthew Perry. This lightweight comedy focuses on a miserable, divorced father (Perry) who magically receives the chance to be 17 again (Efron) and recapture his best years. 17 Again is sitting at a surprisingly fresh 68% at Rotten Tomatoes so I presume it's a pretty harmless way to pass a few hours. And there hasn't been one of these "young again" movies in a good few years now.
Another family film opening this weekend is Hotel For Dogs, which coincidentally stars another former Friends star (Lisa Kudrow), as well as bunch of kids. Based on the novel by Lois Duncan, this Nickelodeon-produced film centres on a pair of orphans who devise a scheme to rescue and care for assorted stray dogs in an old abandoned hotel. Hotel For Dogs scored 44% over at Rotten Tomatoes, and is described as enjoyable enough for kids and pet lovers, but otherwise very predictable.
Finally there's Surfer, Dude, a pseudo-stoner comedy starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, which admittedly I hadn't even heard of until this week. Apparently the film has little to no plot whatsoever, simply focusing on a laid-back Malibu surfer who realises the world around him is changing. McConaughey fans will be pleased to know though he's apparently shirtless for most of the movie. Otherwise Surfer, Dude scored 0% on Rotten Tomatoes. Ouch.
