The Living Dangerously Pub Tour 2006

How different is my new company from EvilCorp? Well, there’s an office club where, apart from a monthly lucky draw and snacks, you go on various regular adventures. Last night we went on a bar trawl through Durban on the Rickshaw bus.

We had to dress skanky, or dodgy (T-shirts included ‘Vaginas are weird’ and ‘Die beste pomp op die dorp’), and apart from all the free booze, and snacks, we had Johnny’s Roti’s for dinner.

In the course of 5-6 hours we stopped in at Joe Cool’s, Cool Runnings , Cockle Jack, Cotton Fields and Flagons and Dragons for a little karaoke to round off the evening. Cool Runnings was awesome; the best stop of the evening- a Jamaican themed pub down some dodgy alley in Umbilo. It also was the place where the company’s main director entertained us by jumping on tables doing his Tarzan impersonation as a result of the ‘Peg game.’

The ‘Peg Game’ ran all night. Essentially 2 pegs were secretly circulated, attached to people’s collars and shirtsleeves. When a whistle was blown, the 2 unfortunate ‘victims’ at that moment in time would either have to down a shooter, or dig for a task in the Box of Misfortune that was carried around all evening. These included kissing one of the account executives, and wearing the ‘official’ Skanky Hat.

Other activities included having to ‘Do the cockroach’ every time the whistle was blown twice- everyone had to fall on their backs and wiggle their legs in the air, no matter where we were.

It really was a fun evening- not at all the dreaded forced event that Friday drinks at EvilCorp always was. Everyone was socialising and having a good time. It was interesting to see some people letting their hair down- the diversity of people in terms of age, experience, and interest makes for a far more ‘normal’ workplace and staff interaction. I ended up only getting home around 11:30.

And I did learn a new awesome way to have Southern Comfort- straight shots! Shooters were my main form of alcohol consumption all evening, while the new website developer and I also consumed plenty of Apple Sourz. I may have a mental block against downing drinks, but I’m quite happy to do it with shooters.

Today all the photos and video were already up on the server. And apparently video of Leon, our web guy, singing ‘It’s Raining Men’ has even been circulating The Hardy Boys advertising agency.

Otherwise, it’s been a very busy week, with activities every evening. I still ahven’t been able to appreciate my new graphics card yet.

On Monday I watched Jui-Jitsu with G and Shirley, followed by having dinner at Paul’s home to celebrate his father’s birthday.

On Tuesday I did a 4.5km speed walk.

On Wednesday we had a big family braai with my grandfather over from the UK (where it was announced that my aunt and uncle are expecting a little boy).

And last night was the bar tour.

I’m really hoping to do some relaxing socialising this weekend.
